Job Summary
The Director of Employee & Labor Relations is responsible for developing and managing the company’s employee and labor relations tactics. This individual ensures compliance with labor laws and regulations, fosters a positive workplace culture, and leads efforts to address employee relations concerns. The role is critical in supporting the company’s mission of delivering quality care in long-term skilled nursing facilities by promoting fair and effective labor practices and employee engagement.
Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities
1. Employee Relations
- Oversee the resolution of employee relations issues, including investigations, conflict mediation, and disciplinary actions, ensuring compliance with company policies and legal requirements.
- Develop and implement employee relations programs and initiatives to enhance employee satisfaction and retention.
- Partner with facility administrators and HR teams to address workplace concerns proactively.
- Act as a trusted advisor to management on best practices and risk mitigation for employee relations.
2. Labor Relations
- Work with the Vice President of Human Resources during collective bargaining negotiations and manage labor contract administration for unionized facilities.
- Develop and maintain productive relationships with labor unions and other employee advocacy groups.
- Ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements and support grievance resolution processes.
- Provide training and guidance to management on labor relations matters, including union avoidance strategies and regulatory compliance.
3. Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local labor laws, including, but not limited to, the FLSA, NLRA, ADA, FMLA, and Title VII.
- Conduct regular audits and assessments of employee and labor relations practices to identify areas of risk and improvement.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and legal counsel on labor and employee relations issues.
4. Leadership and Strategy
- Contribute to developing and executing strategic vision for employee and labor relations aligned with the company’s overall goals.
- Provide HR and management teams with leadership, coaching, and development opportunities.
- Stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes impacting employee and labor relations in skilled nursing.
- Collaborate with HR, legal, and operations teams to drive consistent and equitable application of policies across all facilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; Master’s degree or JD preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in employee and labor relations, including union and non-union environments.
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state labor laws and regulations.
- Proven experience in collective bargaining negotiations and labor contract administration.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to travel to company facilities as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- SPHR or SPC certification.
- Prior experience in a long-term residential healthcare setting
