Join Our Team as a Weigh Station Technician

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is hiring a Weigh Station Technician for our Stephen City Scales Motor Carrier Service Center for our Midnight Shift. As a Weigh Station Technician, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of motorists and protecting Virginia’s highways by monitoring and inspecting overweight and oversized trucks. You’ll work alongside State Police, local law enforcement, and other officials to enforce safety and weighing policies and procedures related to Virginia’s size and weight laws.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Vehicle Inspections: Weigh and inspect commercial vehicles for safety infractions, including malfunctioning brakes and overweight or oversized conditions.
  • Document Verification: Inspect motor carrier documents, such as IFTA, IRP, and operating authority.
  • Problem Reporting: Identify and report vehicle and traffic issues.
  • Data Analysis: Record and analyze safety violation information related to local routing and state truck laws and collect data to support law enforcement activities.
  • Facility Maintenance: Operate push and riding lawn mowers to maintain the grounds and ensure the facility's interior is clean and well-kept.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in collecting, editing, and manipulating data using computers.
  • Industry Knowledge: Basic understanding of truck configuration and equipment, as well as state and federal regulations for overweight and oversized vehicles.
  • Multitasking Abilities: Strong eye/hand coordination for tracking trucks on computer screens while monitoring highway traffic.
  • Problem-solving skills: Ability to troubleshoot truck equipment issues, perform mathematical calculations, and analyze data to recommend traffic control measures.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with customers and staff.
  • Flexibility and Endurance: Capability to work in confined spaces for extended periods, maintain focus on safety monitoring, and work rotating or permanent schedules.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, lift and transport 50 pounds, and operate lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Technical Maintenance: Proficiency in performing minor scale repairs, including using an impact wrench and breaker bar, and maintaining facility cleanliness.
  • Licensing Requirements: Valid driver's license and a driving record that reflects respect for DMV regulations.

  • Knowledge of truck weighing procedures and policies, related Virginia and federal laws, and the Motor Vehicle Code of Virginia.
