About The Department of Psychiatry 

The Department is committed to fostering a culture that values and promotes innovation in training methods, research and service to the community. Our department leads psychiatry education for the Dell Medical School and its post-graduate programs train mental health professionals to become 21st-century leaders in the fields of psychiatry and psychology. Our department’s clinical services provide culturally informed, evidence-based care for individuals and families in multiple general medical and specialty behavioral health settings with an active and strong presence in community settings. Importantly, the Department is leading efforts at T University of Texas at Austin to execute cutting-edge basic and clinical research that illuminates the underlying neurobiological causes of psychiatric disorders and identifies novel treatments for psychiatric disorders.

About The Adult Forensic Psychiatrist Position

The Dell Medical School Department of Psychiatry seeks a board-certified/eligible forensic psychiatrist to join our clinical faculty, working within the Psychiatry Department at Austin State Hospital (ASH) under the direction of the ASH Medical Director. This position offers a unique opportunity to provide patient-centered forensic psychiatric care, contribute to academic excellence, and support innovative clinical, educational, and research initiatives at ASH, a critical institution for the delivery of mental health services in Texas. Student loan forgiveness is available for faculty of the Department of Psychiatry through the Texas Mental Health Professionals Loan Repayment Program.

Austin State Hospital is a state-operated psychiatric facility providing inpatient care and forensic services to individuals with complex mental health needs. ASH is at the forefront of delivering evidence-based psychiatric care in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. The selected candidate will play a vital role in treating individuals in forensic psychiatric settings while contributing to the educational mission of Dell Medical School through the supervision and mentorship of medical students, psychiatry residents, and fellows. Additionally, Dell Medical School anticipates the launch of a Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship in the near future, and this faculty member will play a key role in its development and implementation.
