Job Description
As an ALSAC Cloud Data Engineer III, you will design, develop, and maintain scalable data processing software, data modeling, pipelines, transformations, databases, and supporting cloud infrastructure to solve unique and complex business problems. Leveraging the latest AWS cloud technologies and supporting tools, you will drive the development of data engineering solutions, optimize big data pipelines, and ensure security, compliance, and operational efficiency. This role involves collaborating with ALSAC leadership, Data & Analytics teams, Information Technology (IT) Architecture teams, and other stakeholders to create a cloud-native data infrastructure that enhances business value, accelerates time-to-insight, and supports donor acquisition and operational excellence.
You will act as a strategic contributor to the Business Intelligence (BI) Cloud Platform team, providing mentorship to junior engineers (DE I and DE II), recommending reference architectures, and promoting best practices in data lifecycle management, information security, data privacy, and cloud migration strategies. This position requires a balance of hands-on technical expertise, analytical problem-solving, and the ability to distill complex technical concepts for diverse audiences, including business partners with varying levels of technical understanding.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Data Infrastructure Development: Develop and maintain data processing software, dimensional data modeling, big data pipelines, transformations, and related databases using AWS services (e.g., Redshift, S3, Glue, Athena, Lambda) and complementary tools and languages (e.g., Kafka, Spark, Airflow, Python, dbt, CData).
2. Cloud Architecture Design: Lead the design and development of cloud-native architectures, promoting the adoption of AWS services (e.g., RDS, EMR, EC2, DMS) and hybrid strategies for on-premise-to-cloud migrations, including phased cutovers and parallel environments. The ideal candidate will have experience with migration from Microsoft SQL Server to AWS.
3. Strategic Consultation: Provide strategic guidance to Data & Analytics teams, Data Science teams, IT leadership, and business partners on cloud architecture benefits, data protection, capabilities, scalability, and infrastructure needs. Recommend policies, standards, and guidelines to align with ALSAC’s technical and business objectives. This would include collaborating closely with a dynamic Data Governance framework.
4. Data Optimization & Analytics: Build and optimize large datasets and big data pipelines to support self-service analytics, data science use cases, and performance metrics (e.g., operational efficiency, donor acquisition, time-to-insight). Perform root cause analysis to identify improvement opportunities and be intensely focused on quality engineering.
5. Mentorship & Leadership: Act as a lead to Data Engineer I and II, providing training, mentoring, and knowledge transfer on current and target-state data platforms, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and best practices.
6. DevSecOps Implementation: Advise and prototype software, infrastructure, and data engineering delivery through automation, incorporating testing, quality assurance, compliance, and data protection measures for cloud, hybrid, and on-premise workloads.
7. Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with data, design, product, leadership, and IT teams to resolve complex technical issues, align with enterprise strategies (e.g., Office365, mobility, unified communications), and enhance data availability for customer insights.
8. Risk Mitigation: Identify and mitigate risks to data strategy, privacy, and sustainability, ensuring compliance-aware applications using AWS security services (e.g., IAM, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, KMS, Cyberark).
9. Innovation & Trends: Research emerging technologies, industry trends, and market developments to support product/process/data innovation and operational support activities. Simplify and automate access, deployments, r
