Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a responsible professional position assigned to the Serology Section of the Tampa Public Health Laboratory.  All testing is performed on human specimens and accomplished according to written protocol, some of which is not routine in nature.  As a minimum the incumbent must hold a current State of Florida Clinical Laboratory or Public Health Laboratory Technician’s license in either the specialty of Microbiology or Serology.  Work is performed under minimal supervision.

 

Perform daily, routine to moderately complex serological syphilis screening and confirmatory procedures, highly complex deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) probe testing procedures for the detection of disease-causing microorganisms, and complex ELISA testing procedures for the detection of antigens and antibodies that are related to public health.  Result and report test results.

 

Standardize specialized antigens, antibodies, and reagents.  Prepare controls, special glassware, and equipment necessary for performance of testing.  Perform basic calibrations and preventive maintenance for equipment used in the serology Section.  Make any necessary corrections and record the information.

 

Assists the supervisor in providing daily oversight of the Serology and Genprobe sections.

 

Responsible for:  1) handling of telephone inquiries regarding testing and related results, 2) the maintenance of laboratory test records, 3) preparation of the monthly supply order for the Serology Department, 4) compilation of the monthly statistical report for completed testing, 5) performance of complex quality control testing, including participation in proficiency testing programs.

 

Perform related work as required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing. 

Knowledge of procedures, techniques & equipment used in lab testing and analysis. 

Skill in the use of lab equipment. 

Ability to communicate effectively. 

Ability to work independently. 

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. 

Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum – State of Florida Clinical Laboratory License as a Laboratory Technician (Microbiology or Public Health Microbiology), Chapter 483 F.S and Rule 64B3 F.A.C or eligible for license.

 

Preferred Bachelor’s degree or higher in a chemical or biological science. One year or more of laboratory experience.
