Job Role Summary

This position provides general dentistry services to patients in Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) dental clinics. Applies dental knowledge and skills to develop, present and implement dental treatment plans on assigned patients. Educates patients in preventive and basic dental care principles; supervises clinical operations, patient/staff communications, and the dental staff assigned to his/her dental team.

Essential Duties

  • Provides and supervises high quality dental care/services for children and adults of diverse cultural backgrounds as well as patients with special needs. 
  • Provides general dentistry using knowledge and skills in preventive and restorative dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, and oral surgery. 
  • Refers patients with dental conditions that cannot be treated within the scope of the public health dental Clinic.
  • Treats emergency patients presenting with oral pain and swelling. 
  • In emergency situations, follows emergency protocol and if appropriate, administers CPR and supports the patient until emergency personnel arrive. 
  • Provides dental services/care according to standards of care and conduct of the dental community/profession and Indiana Dental Law. 
  • Effectively directs and coordinates the activities of dental staff assigned to his/her dental team and assures efficient clinic operations. 
  • Supervises dental procedures provided by dental hygienists and dental assistants. 
  • Makes resources available and encourages participation in activities and training opportunities. 
  • Monitors the transfer of chart documents into OnBase. 
  • Approves and monitors staff requests for time off. 
  • Monitors clinic inventories and manages the clinic budget. 
  • Assures that staff adheres to company and departmental policies and procedures, such as HIPAA, OSHA, and quality assurance/improvement policies and procedures. 

Associated Job Duties

  • May answer the clinic phone, schedule/confirm appointments, verify insurance, collect fees, enter patient data, and scan and index dental records into the electronic storage system.
  • May be assigned or need to travel to any MCPHD dental clinic, site or Smile Mobile.
  • May transport supplies to/from the Hasbrook Building to/from dental clinics.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Obtains and reviews medical/dental histories of each patient; determines and documents chief complaints of each patient.
  • Provides extraoral and intraoral exams of hard and soft tissues to determine the oral health of patients; provides diagnoses and prognoses for dental findings and conditions. 
  • Utilizes dental X-rays, local anesthetics, rotary and hand instruments and other commonly used dental supplies, instruments, and equipment in the care of patients.
  • Develops, presents and implements treatment plans, follow-up and maintenance care for patients, according to individual patient dental needs.
  • Apply universal precautions in the care of all patients.
  • Charts progress notes in SOAP format and maintains clear, organized, accurate, current, and thorough documentation in patient dental records in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. 
  • Closes electronic dental notes in a timely manner, according to MCPHD policy.
  • Proficient in utilizing the electronic dental record and the data storage system for electronic health records software and other organizational software.
  • Knowledge in utilizing computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
  • Meets continuing education requirements to maintain current knowledge, skills and licensure.
