About the role

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.

The Cloud Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining cloud-based infrastructure and solutions. Cloud Engineers work closely with vendors, application teams, system administrators, and security teams to ensure efficient and secure utilization of cloud services and technologies. The Cloud Engineer provides all components of Cloud solution delivery including computing resources, storage, networking, and security.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Cloud Infrastructure Design and Implementation:

  • Implement scalable and highly available cloud architectures, including virtual networks, storage, and compute resources.
  • Configure and manage cloud services such as virtual machines, containers, serverless computing, databases, and load balancers.

Cloud Security and Compliance:

  • Understand and implement security best practices and ensure cloud infrastructure is secure from threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Design and implement access controls, encryption mechanisms, and data protection measures.
  • Monitor and respond to cloud security incidents, perform regular vulnerability assessments, and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Deployment and Automation:

  • Creating CI/CD pipelines (often with tools like GitHub, Jenkins, etc.) to automate application deployment and updates within Kubernetes environments.
  • Defining Kubernetes manifests (YAML configuration files) for services, deployments, pods, etc.
  • Employing infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CDK) to manage Kubernetes infrastructure and surrounding AWS resources.

Performance Monitoring and Operations:

  • Implementing monitoring solutions for both AWS infrastructure (Cloudwatch) and Kubernetes components.
  • Setting up logging, alerting, and troubleshooting procedures for Kubernetes clusters.
  • Managing cluster upgrades, scaling, and disaster recovery processes.

DevOps Support and Collaboration

  • Partnering with development teams to containerize applications and configure them for Kubernetes environments.
  • Bridging the gap between infrastructure management and application development with smooth and reliable deployments

Kubernetes Architecture Design and Development

  • Designing highly available, scalable Kubernetes clusters on AWS, potentially using EKS (Amazon's managed Kubernetes service) or self-managed approaches.
  • Optimizing cluster configurations, resource allocation, and networking for application workloads.
  • Integrating Kubernetes with other AWS services (e.g., IAM for security, load balancers, storage solutions).

Collaboration and Documentation:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, system administrators, business owners and project managers to gather requirements and provide technical expertise.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, deployment guides, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Stay up to date with emerging cloud technologies and trends and evaluate their potential benefits and applicability to the enterprise.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree (BS), Computer Science or Information Systems desired.
  • Three – five years of experience working with cloud-based infrastructure and solutions.
  • In-depth understanding of cloud computing concepts, designs, and services.
  • Experience with scripting and automation using languages such as Python, or shell scripting.
  • Proficiency in infrastructure as code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.)
  • Understanding of containers (Docker) and Kubernetes concepts.
  • Familiarity with DevOps principles and tools, including CI/CD pipelines and version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Understanding of core AWS services (EC2, VPCs, IAM, S3, load balancers, etc.)
  • Understanding of security best practices and compliance frameworks.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from market participants, regul
