IN PERSON PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT/INTERVIEW INFORMATION:

In-person hands-on practical assessments will be held on March 10th, and if needed on March 12th.

In-person interviews will be held on March 11th, and if needed on March 13th.

Hiring interviews may occur.

ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:

An EPA 608 Universal Certification issued by The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must be obtained within 12 months of hire/prior to completion of the probationary period and must be maintained throughout employment in this position.

ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The HVAC Technician position at the City of Tucson’s General Services Department maintains, repairs, and replaces City of Tucson HVAC mechanical systems and related equipment. 

Work is performed under the supervision of the HVAC-R Supervisor. This position does not supervise.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspects, troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs electrical circuits, mechanical equipment, and temperature control systems. Services City of Tucson HVAC equipment at various locations, including but not limited to air conditioning, ventilating, heating, refrigeration, computerized digital control, energy management and fire alarm systems. Reads diagrams and maintains HVAC equipment by welding new parts, installing and replacing pipes, troubleshooting electrical problems, tracing wires, and installing sheet metal. 

  • Restores used refrigerant and oils, from HVAC equipment and systems by distilling, filtering, dying and removing impurities using the City’s reclamation system. Follows safety policies and procedures in accordance with federal, state, local and City of Tucson requirements while maintaining HVAC systems and completing reclamation of refrigerants and oils.

  • Schedules and coordinates HVAC projects with contractors and customers, providing estimates and working with other departments as it relates to scopes of work. Places orders and purchases materials needed for replacements or repairs as required for assigned HVAC projects. Reconciles procurement card invoices and documents and enters labor charges, purchases, and other project related data into multiple data systems. Responds to inquiries via phone calls, emails and in-person during site visits concerning maintenance tasks, repairs and projects.

  • Attends City of Tucson safety, department and unit meetings, and other required training related to the safe use of tools and equipment. Optimizes productivity by maintaining the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of assigned vehicles, keeps workspaces clean and organized, and inspects the condition of tool inventory.

  • Performs all other duties and tasks assigned.

Working Conditions:

Work schedule may require early morning, late evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and on-call shifts.

Often works under the following conditions: Indoor and outdoor work with heavy exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or hazardous environment, which includes but not limited to dirt, chemical, loud noise, and extreme weather.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Six (6) months post high school
Experience: Four (4) years of directly related experience
Equivalency: Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

License/Certifications:

Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License.

EPA 608 Type II Certification issued by The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working on HVAC Systems

Experience working with electrical systems

Experience in commercial HVAC repair and maintenance.

Experience working with boilers, heaters
