GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision of the Supervisor II – Fleet Services, the Automotive Mechanic I/II/III performs inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric-powered light vehicles to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the City’s fleet. This position performs preventative maintenance and repairs on automotive systems including engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, driveline components, and air conditioning systems. Work also includes installing and maintaining vehicle accessories and equipment such as emergency lighting, push bumpers, seating systems, decals, and other specialized components used in City vehicles, including police units. Employees utilize diagnostic tools, shop equipment, and fleet maintenance software to document repairs, track maintenance activities, and maintain accurate service records. Positions in this series progress in responsibility and complexity, with higher levels performing advanced diagnostics, exercising greater independent judgment, and providing limited guidance to other staff.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Automotive Mechanic I/II
This positions exercise no supervision.
Automotive Mechanic III
This position may exercise technical supervision over lower-level staff.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Inspect, repair, and perform diagnostic checks and troubleshooting techniques on a variety of gasoline, diesel, hybrid and electric powered light vehicles.
Overhaul and/or repair components such as clutches, brakes, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, universal joints, air conditioning and electrical systems.
Adjust and replace necessary units and parts including valves, pistons, brakes, hoses, body parts, switches, engine parts, and fuel and exhaust components.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs in Fleet Maintenance software.
Provide Parts staff with complete and accurate information when ordering repair parts.
Maintain personal and common work areas according to established safety standards.
Install or replace logos, decals, and placards as needed.
Outfit City vehicles, including police vehicles with accessory packages including seats, emergency lighting, push bumpers and other related equipment.
Operate a personal or city vehicle.

Knowledge of:
Methods and procedures, tools, equipment, and materials used in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
Applicable safety standards for vehicles, equipment, and work areas.
Safe driving principles and practices.
Full range of automotive, diesel, and alternative fuel mechanics.
Skill to:
Operate shop tooling and diagnostic equipment.
Make safe, cost effective and reliable repairs to City vehicles.
Use sound judgment when making repair decisions.
Safely operate a variety of motor vehicles.
Ability to:
Follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Experience:
This is an entry-level position.
At least 18 months of related experience, such as quick lane-type experience with light mechanical work, is preferred.
Education/Training:
A high school diploma or a GED is required.
License or Certificate:
A valid Texas Driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days,
