Looking for experience in local city government? This opportunity might be for you. The Business Operations Intern will support the development, organization, and rollout of a comprehensive Customer Support Strategy for the Planning Department. This includes assisting with the Customer Experience Engagement Program, conducting a needs assessment based on focus group sessions feedback, coordinating the positioning and elevation of departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), on an as/need basis - assisting other team members with project rollouts, assessing use of technology to elevate team’s position with projects and programs within the department and throughout the City. Intern might have the opportunity to collaborate on projects with other interns in other areas.
This role could be ideal for a student whose major is undeclared, or one who is interested in exploring public administration, operations, business management or a business-related field, communications, sociology, process design, marketing, education, etc.,.
Key Responsibilities - Customer Experience Engagement Program
Assist in developing components of the department’s customer experience strategy.
Conduct research on customer service best practices in planning, permitting, and zoning environments.
Help prepare internal training materials, engagement and feedback tools.
Review customer feedback data and help identify trends and service improvement opportunities – particularly but not limited to the municipal space.
Assist in the coordination or support of engagement strategy with program participants, responses and conducting evaluations.
Track and organize findings from customer interactions with permitting, zoning, inspections, and customer service touchpoints.
Synthesize program and project results and assist in preparing reports, dashboards, or presentations.
Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Support & Organization
Support the review of current business / planning-related SOPs.
Interview staff, gather process details, and map workflows as directed if/as necessary.
Organize documents into a standardized department-wide structure.
Assist in developing naming conventions, and version-control practices.
General administrative and Team support
Review and help with shared project trackers, timelines, and documentation as needed.
Assist with internal team workflows if/as needed – supporting other business program-related projects.
Qualifications /KSA
Student currently pursuing a degree
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
Ability to analyze, be objective and constructive
Interest in government, operations, planning, business, public sector or community services
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.,)
Willingness to learn
