About the role

The Technical Officer (Aquatic Animal Health Research) supports applied, industry-focused research for the Tasmanian Salmonid Aquaculture Industry. This role contributes to research programs investigating endemic infectious diseases of salmonid fish, developing prototype vaccines and diagnostic procedures for bacterial and viral pathogens affecting salmonids in Tasmania.

• Assist with the day-to-day operation and coordination of fish research laboratories in accordance with the Animal Health Laboratory Quality Management System.
• Prepare, maintain and utilise fish cell lines and bacterial and/or viral cultures to support diagnostic and research programs.
• Process diagnostic samples from aquatic animals in a biosecure laboratory environment.
• Undertake laboratory research using a range of molecular, cellular and protein‑based techniques to support studies into fish diseases, vaccine development and diagnostic testing.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight (minimum 58.80 hours, by negotiation).

Period of appointment

36 months.

Essential requirements

• A Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Applied Science, or equivalent level, relevant to the nature of the work to be undertaken, as provided by either a university, a vocational education organisation or a registered and accredited training provider.

Desirable requirements

• A current motor vehicle driver’s licence.
