What is special about this role?

As the HR Business Partner for our state-of-the-art San Diego lab, you will play a critical role in collaborating with the team and other client groups to provide proactive thought leadership, guidance and support for all people-related needs. As the site HR lead in San Diego, you will have the opportunity to shape and support a vibrant and dynamic workplace.  This unique opportunity will also allow you to lead and contribute to company-wide People-team initiatives, including annual review cycles, engagement surveys, compliance projects and reporting, and employee benefits and wellness programs.

This position combines the responsibilities of an HR Business Partner (70%) with a focus on HR compliance and benefits (30%). 

As a Human Resources Business Partner, you will:

HR Business Partner:

  • Develop a solid understanding of the business, build relationships with assigned client groups, and create close partnerships across the organization
  • Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues; conduct effective, thorough and objective investigations
  • Provide guidance and coach managers and other team members
  • Collaborate with managers to support team career development - creating career paths, identifying skill gaps and training needs
  • Partner with managers on performance review, calibration, and compensation discussions to ensure fairness in decision making  
  • Participates in the Recruiting process by reviewing requisitions for appropriate leveling and compensation
  • Manage and optimize HR processes using systems such as BambooHR and CultureAmp, including employee data management, performance reviews, and engagement surveys
  • Partner with L&D to evaluate and monitor effectiveness of training programs

Project Management

  • Project manage bi-annual performance management cycles and employee engagement surveys for the company

Compliance

  • Manage the execution of compliance initiatives including EEO, ADA, Workers Compensation, Unemployment, Injury and Illness Prevention, and Workplace Violence Prevention.
  • Support Employee Benefits Administration, including managing the enrollment process, leaves of absence, and vendor management
  • Serve as the Work Safety Representative for HR, ensuring compliance with all safety regulations and promoting a safe workplace environment

About you:

  • Minimum of 5 years of HR experience with a diverse set of employees, including non-exempt employee groups
  • Track record of building strong relationships with managers and employees to define strategies and gain required team member support 
  • Proven experience of successfully navigating a wide variety of employee relations scenarios
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to offer thoughtful support and coaching to employees and leaders
  • Comprehensive understanding of employment laws and regulations (FLSA, ADA, EEO, OSHA)
  • Working knowledge of multiple human resource disciplines, including compensation and benefits, people analytics, learning and development
  • Strong project management, prioritization and organizational skills
  • Ability and willingness to work onsite 2-3 days per week in the Helix San Diego (La Jolla) office/ lab
  • Comfortable working as the sole HR team member in San Diego (within a distributed People team)
  • Thrive in an environment with a high degree of change, ambiguity and transformation
  • BA strongly preferred
