About the role

The University of Virginia’s Department of Capital Construction and Renovations (CC&R), UVA Health Division has exciting career opportunities for experienced and dynamic individuals to lead teams overseeing the construction and renovation of clinical and research facilities as well as, the upgrade and/or replacement of existing critical building infrastructure systems at UVA Health. The Team Leader will facilitate the communication and coordination process between Facilities Management, the Office of the University Building Official, and the Office of the University Architect during the design and construction of these facilities. The successful candidates will bring experience in design, construction and maintenance of technically complex and logistically challenging healthcare and/or research facilities and will have the opportunity to utilize their unique skill sets and deep expertise in a leadership capacity, working alongside University and UVA Health partners, to ensure successful management and delivery of a significant portfolio of construction projects.  This role offers professional development opportunities and clear career pathways within Facilities Management, and reports to and receives guidance from the CC&R Associate Director for UVA Health.

Facilities Management supports the University of Virginia’s wide range of academic, research, and patient care programs.  With over 1,100 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for managing the University’s Major Capital Construction and Renovations Program, the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA’s buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as, other University owned and leased properties.

The Team Leader will be a collaborative leader as well as, a successful strategic project manager, who balances big picture thinking with the ability to pragmatically drive work forward.  An experienced and successful relationship builder, s/he will be skilled at resolving conflicts and building a coalition of key University and UVA Health stakeholders as well as, professional consulting and construction firms.  The incumbent will be decisive and able to make and implement timely decisions while addressing risks and opportunities.  The Team Leader will personally manage a significant group of projects as well as, supervise a group of four to six project coordinators, project managers, and construction administration managers working together as a team.  

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in the following areas:

Operations Leadership:  Assisting in setting strategic and operational direction; leading, influencing, and driving decisions; delivering against multiple short- and long-term priorities; leading diverse teams of direct and indirect team members; managing performance and behaviors; effectively collaborating, communicating, and engaging diverse constituencies.

Process Excellence:  Leading and managing cross-functional project teams in improving service processes; assessing the effectiveness of the project approach and recommending real-time adjustments accordingly, engaging stakeholder constituencies to assure their needs and perspectives are central to project decisions.

Construction Management:  Effectively managing scope, schedule, and budget; supporting the planning and construction process by reviewing architectural/engineering documents, schedules, and cost estimates; and providing managerial support for design, engineering, construction, and procurement across the University Community.   

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Building Construction, or equivalent field required.  Professional registration is preferred.

  • Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in management of design, construction, and renovation of educational, healthcare, institutional and/or commercial facilities. 

  • Four years of supervisory or leadership experience managing a team

  • High degree of technical proficiency and ability to understand and communicate complex matters quickly and efficiently.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; excellent interpersonal communication skills to foster inclusiveness and collaborations.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Compensation

Minimum starting salary of $125,000; actual starting salary will be commensurate with experience. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employees benefits package highlights include:
