Overview:  

We are hiring an Application Developer who will focus on supporting Enterprise IT managed, custom configured, off-the-shelf (COTS) applications! This position resides in the Software Engineering group in the Application Development, Information Technology Services Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

You will be primarily responsible for administering, maintaining, and supporting software that manages intellectual property information, enterprise documents, and records.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Provide application programming support as required to maintain COTS applications.
  • Interface and meet regularly with the customers and vendors of the applications to resolve issues and/or provide customer feedback. Identify and recommend continuous improvements to application processes and workflows.
  • Support ORNL’s Intellectual Property Management system and ORNL’s Enterprise Document and Records Management system. Duties include but are not limited to providing end user support, performing system upgrades, performing application upgrades, bulk loading data requests, validating data for quality assurance, creating reports, running reports, troubleshooting permission/data/workflow issues, participating in testing, and performing application code changes as requested by the customer.
  • Troubleshoot application problems with end users and assist in the resolution of application issues. Duties include ability to perform advanced debugging and/or other troubleshooting techniques to correctly diagnose and determine the cause of an application issue. Responsible for resolving the issue or escalating the issue with the vendor. Responsible for expert understanding of the application, tracking end user issues from beginning to end, and validating system fixes.
  • Maintain application data via Microsoft SQL Server. Duties include developing SQL routines and queries to identify patterns or issues with data and implement effective and repeatable query updates to resolve data quality issues.
  • Ensure application and system documentation remains up-to-date and follows Software Quality Assurance policies and procedures. Ensure server and application configuration changes are appropriately documented and tracked in ServiceNow change management system.
  • Interact with end users to test applications and ensure quality changes are delivered without error. Duties include ability to test features, functions, and workflows of the application, and the ability to write documentation, test plans, and systems guides.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or a related technical or scientific field of study with at least 5 years of proven experience is required, or an overall combination of equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 5+ years of experience in:
    • Experience supporting custom applications.
    • Familiarity with application-based permissions, system workflows, and client/server application technologies.
    • Formalized application development and debugging techniques.
    • Updating and querying relational databases, such as Microsoft SQL Server

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Software and code analysis, performance, security, and debugging.
  • Software code unit testing
  • Ability to translate business workflows to application workflows.

    • Web services (SOAP and REST)
    • Traditional web development (e.g., HTML5, CSS, XML, and JavaScript)
    • MS SQL Server (2016 or later)
    • Microsoft Windows Server platforms
