Position Specific Description

NextEra Energy’s Tribal Relations staff works with tribal communities across the country by working collaboratively with them early in energy project development to ensure that we identify, avoid where feasible, and help protect sensitive tribal cultural resources during development and construction. NextEra’s approach has become a model in the energy industry and is widely recognized as one of the most effective in the country.This position will work with all of the NextEra Energy business units to support Tribal and Indigenous relations during the development, construction, and operation of energy projects in the US and Canada. 

 

Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Create and manage relationships with tribal cultural representatives and other tribal stakeholders to facilitate a positive working relationship 
  • Anticipate and respond to tribal community requests in support of issue avoidance/resolution, tribal business development and community support, and manage day to day dialogue  
  • Support development of tribal relationships with company executives
  • Work closely and seamlessly with the company’s origination and business development, environmental, legal, engineering and construction, transmission, and project valuation teams on issue avoidance and resolution, business development on tribal lands, internal education and community support activities
  • Support development and implementation internal training programs and policies to promote corporate diversity goals inclusive of Native American people
  • Support preparation and submission of necessary permits and approvals required to originate, develop, construct and operate proposed projects under tribal laws and federal regulations
     

Job Overview

Employees in this role develop and execute plans for new and enhanced generation projects. This job is responsible for resource allocation, schedules, cost and technical adequacy, ensuring the project or transaction is completed in the most cost-effective and competitive manner. This position manages all aspects of the business deal and ensures the project is completed on time and within budgetary constraints.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages all aspects of the day-to-day transaction process to ensure timely completion as well as a cost-effective and competitive result
  • Leads and coordinates key functions such as financial feasibility analyses, engineering/design, project legal review, permitting activities and financial negotiations
  • Responsible for managing multiple and complex projects 
  • Coordinates due diligence activities with other internal groups to ensure proper analysis and structuring of assigned projects
  • Acts as liaison between internal and external specialists regarding procurement, contracting, permitting and interconnection
  • Constructs contractual arrangements for project development
  • Negotiates agreements with consultants and subcontractors
  • Ensures compliance with applicable technical and regulatory requirements
  • Fosters external relationships with customers, third parties and members of the community
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High School Grad/GED
  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Experience
  • Experience:  5+ years
