The Senior Commercial Real Estate Credit Underwriter is a key member of the originations team supporting Relationships Managers on financing construction and bridge financing vehicles. The role will be tasked with establishing a first-look valuation and execution analysis for incoming submissions, and following through with a data integrity review to ensure consistent quality of loans presented to the loan committee for term sheet issuance. As the organization continues to grow, opportunities may exist to grow into a Relationship Manager role, Credit or other areas within the organization.
Being a private lender, DLP Lending underwrites all of our loans based on proprietary guidelines & checklists, so it is imperative to the success of this role that both experience and open-mindedness are deployed in analyzing credit risks and mitigants, and sets examples for all team members to follow. This role is critical to both protecting the best interests of the organization, as well as expediting all qualified files. This role will be the main support for the Senior Director of Credit Structuring.
What you have already achieved: (Requirements)
- Bachelor's degree in finance, economics, business, or a related field. MBA or a Master's in Finance (preferred).
- Minimum of 5 - 10 years experience in private credit, direct lending/banking, or credit underwriting in multifamily industry.
- Strong investor commercial real estate underwriting skills such as analyzing pro-formas, budgets, interest reserves, conducting due diligence, and evaluating the financial health of real estate owner/operators/developers.
- Experience in understanding lending regulations, disclosure requirements, and compliance frameworks.
- Experience leading and training credit analysts.
- Proficiency in financial modeling to include sizing loan transactions, building financial models, conducting sensitivity analysis, and stress testing assumptions.
- Experience with CMBS and Agency lending experience (preferred). Experience with land, lot development or homebuilding is a plus.
What you are great at: (Responsibilities)
- Play an integral role within the organization providing direct support to the Senior Director of Credit Structuring, mentoring junior team members, while remaining a resource to the Originations Team and other Operating departments.
- Preliminary Screening of Deals with Relationship Manager by Underwriting loan requests, including borrower financials, investment track records, valuation review, and property inspections, in order to properly assess risk factors.
- Work closely with the Relationship manager to size loan transactions and write a comprehensive deal narrative encompassing viability and valuation of the project with consideration to the market, borrower's experience and financial position.
- Manage the pipeline by allocating deals based on capacity and familiarity with clientele, developing daily agendas, and providing insights through weekly reporting
- Conducting analysis to ensure loans meet credit standards, the loan is leverageable, crafted analytical narratives highlight the operator’s ability to exit, and data entry is accurate
- Participating in Credit Committee meetings or providing written support toward actionable recommendations.
- Maintains a “first contact point,” of the pipeline and quickly determines the borrower’s ability to exit the loan while evaluating loan strength through factors such as ROI, DSCR, and As Completed Value.
- Compiling data from all tools and platforms to provide insights that the team can use to meaningfully enhance the "Pro Deal Mentality" instilled in the Originations team while balancing Risk Appetite.
- Reviewing third party sources for comparable analysis to support estimated preliminary value conclusions.
- Ensuring that there are always mitigants that are clearly stated and identified on any loans that have perceived risk.
- Exhibiting a deep understanding of firm's loan underwriting guidelines, pricing grids and leverage partners’ credit boxes to identify loans that are ineligible
- Continuously provide feedback and suggestions on ways that DLP Capital can improve its processes and procedures.
