Job Summary:

The VUMC data center is a 24x7x365 operation and hosts all the medical center’s most critical IT infrastructure. The Data Center Operations Specialist is responsible for maintenance and improvement of the operation, integrity, and security of this critical infrastructure. 

The Specialist installs, uninstalls, and moves hardware including but not limited to cabinets, shelves, power strips, rails, servers, storage, fiber/copper/other cables, and other devices in the Data Center. The specialist manages documentation and labels devices, racks, and cables. The specialist works in a standard ticketing system, providing clear, timely, and appropriate communications.  

This position will be responsible for the day-to-day operational needs of data center facilities in a 24 X 7 operating environment. They will maintain the proper operating conditions for all IT processing and network equipment to ensure 100% uptime for all systems. The specialist supports Data Center uptime through attentive and proactive monitoring of facilities systems including fire suppression, water infiltration detection, air cooling, and power.

Responsibilities:  

  • Provide clear, timely, and appropriate communications using a standard ticketing system.  

  • Execute MACs (Moves/Adds/Changes) for data center devices, infrastructure, and cabling while following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Program Policies, Safety Policies, and Security Policies.  

  • Monitor all data center critical facility systems: fire suppression, water infiltration, air cooling, and power.   

  • Collaborate with internal and external parties to assist in critical facility system incident response.  

  • Coordinate & communicate with customers to provide data center remote hands support.  

  • Manage data center access and maintain physical security of infrastructure and IT assets.  

  • Create, manage, and maintain thorough documentation of IT assets, chain of custody, and shipments.  

  • Track, audit, and update data center & IT assets within Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software.   

  • Thoroughly prepare IT hardware for destruction in coordination with a third-party vendor.  

  • Facilitate communications & notifications during major incidents (critical application outages).  

  • Prioritize workloads, communicate roadblocks, and collaborate in alignment with VUMC and the Data Center's mission.  

  • On-Call, Vacation, and Sick Coverage as needed to maintain 24x7x365 operations.  

  • Other duties as assigned   

  

Required Skills:   

•        Physically assist in moving and racking equipment   

•        Able to safely lift and move a minimum of fifty (50) pounds   

•        Excellent verbal and written communication skills   

•        Ability to update asset management data as required  

•        Effectively utilizes the ticket management system   

•        On-Call, Vacation, and Sick Coverage as needed.  

•        Able to Install/Uninstall/Maintain data center devices (servers, switches, storage and other hardware)   

•        Able to cable systems (power/copper/fiber/other) correctly based on ticket requirements and SOP standards   

•        Communicates effectively in tickets, emails, telephone conversations, and in-person interactions with customers, management, and peers   

•        Must work effectively with other staff and customers   

•        Must be able to multi-task   

•        Must be able to adapt to changing priorities, conditions, and circumstances   

•        Must be punctual and reliable
