About the role

The Senior Laboratory Point-of-Care (POC) Testing Coordinator oversees all aspects of point-of-care testing services across various healthcare settings, including hospitals and outpatient clinics. This role is crucial in ensuring high-quality diagnostic tests are conducted outside traditional laboratory environments, emphasizing accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency. Serves as a subject matter expert, collaborating with medical personnel to assess testing requirements and recommend appropriate testing devices. Analyzes lab compliance-related data issues, interprets findings, reports results, and identifies trends. Additionally, the Coordinator plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of hospital and clinical laboratory practices, procedures, and regulations

  • Oversee the implementation and management of point-of-care testing programs within clinical departments. 
  • Ensure all point-of-care tests are performed following proper protocols, guidelines, and industry standards. 
  • Provide training to healthcare personnel on the use of point-of-care testing devices and procedures. 
  • Conduct competency assessments for staff to ensure proficiency in testing techniques. 
  • Develop and deliver ongoing education and support to staff regarding updates in point-of-care testing practices. 
  • Establish and monitor quality control processes to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. 
  • Implement quality assurance initiatives, including equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting. 
  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, JACHO). 
  • Stay current with federal, state, and local regulations regarding point-of-care testing. 
  • Ensure testing sites are compliant with all applicable standards and regulations. 
  • Prepare for and manage inspections by regulatory agencies. 
  • Oversee inventory management of point-of-care testing supplies and equipment. 
  • Ensure that all testing equipment is functioning properly and order supplies as necessary. 
  • Coordinate repair and maintenance of equipment when needed. 
  • Maintain accurate records of all point-of-care testing activities, including results, equipment maintenance, and inventory usage. 
  • Provide timely and accurate reports to management regarding testing outcomes, compliance, and operational performance. 
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all inquiries related to point-of-care testing. 
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff, medical professionals, and other departments to ensure smooth integration of testing services within the patient care process. 
  • Address any concerns or issues related to point-of-care testing in a timely and professional manner.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in a healthcare related field.

Experience: Five (5) years of experience in a clinical laboratory with emphasis on skills related to work area is required. POC Hospital and/or clinical laboratory experience preferred.

License/Certification: MLS Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist is required upon hire.

Retirement - Employees are eligible for either the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). TRS is a defined benefit retirement plan which UT Health matches employee contributions. ORP is for eligible faculty staff employees. Voluntary retirement programs are also available to invest before- or after-tax dollars with the choice of five quality retirement plan providers.
