Charles R. Drew University is located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of south Los Angeles and was founded in 1966 in the wake of the Watts uprising. CDU was founded to address inadequate medical care in the region and to provide equitable medical education opportunities for under-represented students.

CDU offers the only historically black Doctor of Medicine program west of the Mississippi, and is strongly invested in the local and regional community. The university leads multiple partnerships and programs to provide equitable healthcare resources in a variety of south Los Angeles neighborhoods.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The CAP Fellowship Program Director (PD) is responsible and accountable for the overall program administration and operations, which includes teaching and scholarly activity, fellow recruitment and selection, supervision, evaluation and promotion of fellows, and disciplinary action, ensuring due process. As the leader, the PD maintains the program’s vision, accreditation compliance, and high, rigorous standards for fellows’ training. It is of utmost importance that the PD models outstanding professionalism, a scholarly approach to work, high quality patient care, educational excellence. Additionally, the PD is accountable to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), the designated institutional official (DIO), and to the ACGME Review Committee (RC) for the timely and accurate completion of all tasks. This position requires strong leadership, communication, problem solving, interpersonal skills and a passion for improving the lives of children.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Program Administration
  • Maintaining accreditation compliance
  • Curriculum development and implementation – to include addressing the social drivers of health in the populations served
  • Recruitment and selection – application review, interview and match rank list
  • Evaluation and promotion of fellows
  • Resource management – work with department chair and other institutional leaders to secure educational, clinical and financial resources for program operations
  • Policy Implementation – ensure adherence to institutional (GME) and departmental policies re duty hour, patient load and trainees’ wellbeing
  • Clinical Educational Leadership to maintain a learning environment conducive to educating fellows in each of the ACGME Competency domains
  • Supervise and teach trainees - fellows, residents and medical students
• Scholarly Activity – participate in research, publications, presentations, while also mentoring fellows in achieving their required scholarly projects
• Faculty development – recruit, mentor and support faculty development
• Advocacy – promote and model leadership in advocating for improving the lives of children and their families

 Other Duties and Responsibilities:

Participation in the institutional governance of GME programs:

• Maintain current knowledge of and compliance with CDU GME policies and procedures
• Maintain current knowledge of and compliance with ACGME institutional, common program, and program-specific requirements (acgme.org)
• Maintain current knowledge of and compliance with ACGME Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) expectations Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) (acgme.org)
• Participate in GMEC, subcommittees, task forces, and special and/or internal review committees as requested, including program representation at all GMEC meetings as appropriate
• Cooperate promptly, accurately and completely with requests by the GMEC, Office of Graduate Medical Education, or ACGME for information, documentation, etc.
• Ensure that residents and faculty comply with periodic surveys by the ACGME, GMEC and Office of GME.

 Annual Program Evaluation, Special Reviews and Internal Reviews:

• Conduct an Annual Program Evaluation (APE), assess and monitor any action items developed, and record in New Innovations in a timely fashion.
• Prepare internal or special review materials and reports as required by GMEC protocols and submit above information to the Office of GME by the dates requested.
• Develop action plans for correction of areas of non-compliance as identified by any of the above reviews and provide periodic updates to the GMEC.
