Job Duties
The Deputy Director - Institutions is a key executive leadership position within the Virginia Department of Corrections, reporting directly to the Agency Head is responsible for the comprehensive operations and management of all correctional facilities. This position ensures our prisons operate safely, securely, and efficiently while meeting the needs of incarcerated individuals and maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations. The Deputy Director - Institution provides strategic leadership to correctional staff and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to advance the agency's mission.
Minimum Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of correctional facility operations, security protocols, and rehabilitation programs. Familiarity with state and federal laws governing corrections. Extensive leadership and decision-making skills, with demonstrated ability to manage teams and complex systems. Strong management skills with a focus on operational excellence and staff development. Strong analytical and decision-making abilities, particularly in high-pressure situations. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to effectively work with diverse stakeholders. Proven ability to lead large, complex operations while maintaining alignment with organizational goals. Highly skilled in fostering a culture of accountability, respect, service, and innovation.
Additional Considerations
Advanced knowledge in criminal justice, public administration or related field. Senior leadership experience in corrections, community supervision, or a related field. Demonstrated success in managing large teams and complex operations. Experience with strategic planning, policy development, and performance management. Proven ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies and community organizations.
