Title: Part-Time Associate Instructor, ELA
Reports To: Senior Manager of Teaching and Learning
FLSA: Part-time, Seasonal
Compensation: $32 hourly 
Location: Guilford County, North Carolina (Remote)
Spring Semester Dates:

  • Pre-Semester Orientation: Wed, Feb 12 (5:30-8:30pm)
  • Programming Dates: Feb 22-May 17
    • This includes Saturday programming & some weekday evenings. Please see the full schedule below.

POSITION OVERVIEW 
Associate Instructors will join SEO’s community of passionate educators to implement a rigorous college prep curriculum for motivated and driven high school students. Associate Instructors co-teach alongside Instructors to facilitate classroom instruction, teach mini lessons, organize small group and one-on-one instruction, and provide additional Scholar support. Associate Instructors are the first to cover when there is an instructor absence and do not have grading responsibilities. Associate Instructors co-teach ELA and Identity and Empowerment (IE) for 9th, 10th, or 11th grade Scholars.

SEO North Carolina is a bichronous program for Scholars with lesson instruction is held 100% online, facilitated through Zoom. 

COURSES
ELA Associate Instructors will be hired for either 9th, 10th, or 11th grade based on their content expertise. ELA Associate Instructors will also co-teach 1 period of our Identity & Empowerment (IE) class. The following courses are taught in Spring based on the grade level:

English Language Arts Courses:

  • 9th Grade: Theory of Intelligence
  • 10th Grade: Critical Media Analysis
  • 11th Grade: Personal Statement Writing

Identity & Empowerment Courses:

  • 9th Grade: Personal and Social Identities
  • 10th Grade: Identity and Mental Health
  • 11th Grade: Supplemental Statement Writing

PROGRAMMING DATES, TIMES, AND HOURS

  • Self-guided Asynchronous Instructor Training: New Instructional staff will complete Asynchronous Training that equates to 10 hours of work. This can be completed on your own time and will be completed prior to the start of programming.
  • Instructor Orientations: Wednesday, February 12, 5:30-8:30pm on Zoom
  • Meet the Instructors: 9th Grade Instructors meet incoming SEO Scholars: Wednesday, February 19, 5:30-6:30pm
  • Instruction: February 22-May 17:
  • Synchronous Online Instruction
    • Saturday Academy programming,  9:35am-2:15pm
    • 02/22, 03/01, 03/08, 03/22, 04/05, 04/12, 04/19, 05/03, 05/10, 05/17
  • Asynchronous Academic Support
    • Hold office hours, meet with Student Advisor, and engage with Scholars’ work asynchronously
    • Thursdays from 5:30-7:30pm on select weeks
    • 02/24-02/28, 03/10-03/14, 03/24-03/28, 04/07-04/11, 04/21-04/25, 05/12-05/16

The Instructors’ weekly hours are made up of standard and flex expectations, varying based on the programming weeks. Weekly hours will range from 10-18  hours/week based on asynchronous or synchronous weeks of programming.

  • Standard Hours are when the instructor must be working synchronously with staff or students
    • Saturday Academy: 9:35am-2:15pm
    • Asynchronous Week Office Hours: Thursday evenings, 5:30-7:30pm on select weeks
  • Flex Hours make up the additional “instructor work” educators know go into the job. This is time spent preparing for the lesson, grading, entering gradebook data, writing Scholar feedback, communicating with staff and Scholars, etc. These are hours put in outside of the required schedule and can be completed asynchronously throughout the week.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Online Instruction & Facilitation – Co-Teach four to five periods including ELA and Identity & Empowerment classes. When asked to cover for another instructor, Associate Instructors will lead the class on their own. Follow provided lesson plans and meet lesson objectives, abiding by SEO’s articulated criteria for rigorous instruction and student engagement.
  • Navigate Instructional Technologies – Learn and efficiently utilize our instructional technologies such as Zoom (video conferencing and chat), Brightspace (Learning Management System), Desmos, and GSuit applications
