Position Overview and Responsibilities:

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of State Lands is Florida’s lead agency for environmental management and stewardship, serving as staff to the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund. The Division of State Lands’ Office of Environmental Services identifies, evaluates, and stewards critical natural lands to promote biodiversity and public benefit. The Office of Environmental Services administers the Florida Forever program, the state’s premier conservation and recreation lands acquisition program; a blueprint for conserving Florida’s natural and cultural heritage. The Office of Environmental Services’ Florida Forever program is known for advancing science-based planning and sustainable land management strategies for conservation, ecosystem restoration and public recreation. This position’s duties and responsibilities include:

  • Conduct organizational studies and evaluations on office procedures providing technical assistance and developing procedures to assist the Office of Environmental Services to operate more efficiently and effectively.
  • Provides support to the Florida Forever Program and the Office of Environmental Services with the review, mapping and database input of Florida Forever proposals and initial application processing.
  • Conducts the GIS analysis of existing Florida Forever projects for the purposes of identifying potential boundary modifications for areas that are no longer suitable for conservation, to make recommendations on essential and priority project parcels and for other proposed boundary changes to Florida Forever projects. Includes scheduling, organizing, and assembling information, documents, and team members to evaluate proposed changes. Assembles findings into reports and presentations, prepares related agenda items, and provides final revisions to data for use in the annual update of the Florida Forever Plan, including updating the Florida Forever Plan Dashboard.
  • Consults with supervisor to create, organize, and assemble information, maps, and documents to develop reports for the state’s conservation land acquisition planning program.
  • Applies scientific and technical knowledge to assist with the development of GIS policies and procedures for the conservation land acquisition planning program.
  • Coordinates with the State Lands GIS administrator to ensure that the data used for analysis is current and changes to data layers are regularly updated and on other related projects as required, including conducting the resource analysis of potential acquisition parcels for internal meetings.
  • Updates and maintains the Florida Forever StoryMap.
  • Identifies appropriate data collection tools to assist with site evaluation and land management reviews and coordinates with other Offices/Bureaus to develop/implement. Works with the State-Owned Lands Inventory on improvements to relevant IT functions.
  • Coordinates with other land management agencies (state and federal), universities and non-governmental partners.
  • Assists with Florida Forever site assessments and Land Management Reviews as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
