The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) provides clerical support to the clinical team in carrying out the daily functions of patient care. The HUC is responsible for transcription of physician's orders, maintaining the patient's medical record, related forms and documents from admission to discharge. Provides the communication link for processing information/requests to and from patients, staff, visitors, physicians, and other departments or agencies. UC Health is an EEO employer. 

 Transcription of Physician’s Orders 

Review orders as written and notify the nurse of any STAT orders. 

Complete computer order entry and requisitions in a timely manner and forward to the appropriate department. 

Schedule diagnostic tests with the appropriate department. 

Document completion of all transcribed orders. 

Perform clerical activities related to the admission, transfer, or discharge of patients. 

 Communication & Clerical Support 

Multitask effectively during periods of high activity or stress. 

Communicate clearly and professionally with healthcare providers. 

Answer phones using proper etiquette and assist with call management. 

Provide customer service to patients, families, visitors, and staff. 

Enter appropriate information in the electronic communication system. 

Answer patient call lights promptly. 

Page or call appropriate personnel as needed. 

Notify healthcare providers of critical test results. 

Act as a receptionist, greeting and assisting patients, visitors, physicians, and staff. 

Serve as a unit resource when needed. 

Ensure patient information is handled according to HIPAA regulations. 

Chart Responsibilities 

Assemble charts for new admissions. 

Maintain charts throughout the shift. 

Add reports to charts promptly as needed. 

Facilitate charts to medical records. 

Copy charts as required. 

Break down discharged patient charts and prepare for medical record pickup. 

Unit Environment & Accountability 

Perform courier duties as directed by the RN. 

Complete admission, transfer, discharge, and statistical logbooks. 

Assist with ordering and stocking supplies, equipment, and forms. 

Assist with placing patient charges. 

Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment. 

Serve as a patient sitter as needed. 

Notify the nurse immediately if equipment is unavailable. 

Assist with unit statistics and Quality Improvement data. 

Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to work in multiple areas. 

Assist with orienting and mentoring new personnel and volunteers. 

Education: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • HUC education from college or vocational school preferred.
  • 1-2 years equivalent customer service experience.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Takes initiative on tasks with minimal supervision, self-starter.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communications skills both written and verbal required.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with Microsoft Software packages, including Word, Excel, Outlook and database management.
  • Demonstrated time management skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a demanding environment are essential.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
  • Completes yearly mandatory unit specific, hospital and safety education
  • BLS (if not certified at hire, can receive training during orientation)
