About the role

Summary: The Biomedical Sciences Department at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Physiology to begin Fall 2025. Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Physiology or a closely related field. A successful applicant will be expected to: teach human physiology courses and associated labs (intermediate nutrition classes, if able); develop an active research program at GVSU which engages undergraduate and graduate students; and be an active, contributing member of the broader community (inside and outside the institution). We encourage candidates whose research and teaching interests have the potential to engage the West Michigan community to apply. We are especially interested in candidates from under-represented groups and individuals who have experience working with diverse student and community populations.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Ph.D. in Physiology or closely related field. Current ABD candidates will be considered for a two-year contract with provision that the Ph.D. must be completed by December 2026.
  • Evidence of training that prepared the candidate to teach college physiology classes.
  • An understanding of ‘best practices’ in teaching college physiology classes.
  • Ability to develop an active research program at GVSU that engages students.
  • Evidence of one’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Experience teaching advanced physiology classes.
  • Evidence of training that prepared the candidate to teach intermediate level nutrition classes.
  • Post-doctoral research experience.

Responsibilities:

Tenure-line faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are typically hired on nine-month contracts, with a nine contact hour teaching load per semester (usually 3 classes). They are also expected to engage in scholarly/creative activity, service, and a significant focus, which is equivalent to three contact hours of additional responsibilities in teaching, scholarly/creative activity, and/or service depending on the successful candidate's interests and the department’s needs.

Minimum Starting Salary: $76,866; commensurate with experience.
