SMUD's Operations PMO group is looking for an intern to assist the team with project and portoflio management, business analysis, and operations support. 


The intern will gain hands-on experience in data analysis by using Excel to analyze data sets, identify trends, and generate actionable insights. They will assist with project support tasks, including scheduling meetings, coordinating project timelines, and ensuring project milestones are met by following up on outstanding issues. Additionally, the intern will maintain accurate documentation of data analyses, dashboard updates, and project progress for reporting purposes. Collaboration will be a key aspect of the role, as the intern will work closely with team members to understand their data needs and provide analytical support, including creating dashboards in Excel and/or Power BI to effectively present data.

About SMUD's College Internship Program

SMUD's College Internship Program provides college interns with an opportunity to contribute their skills and knowledge to SMUD while gaining valuable work experience. Workshops and activities will also be part of the program where interns will have the opportunity to be immersed in SMUD's culture and learn leadership skills as well as develop their professional skills.

Purpose

Under staff direction, incumbents in this classification are full-time students who perform research and analytical tasks for projects and assignments that utilize specific and acquired academic skills and knowledge in non-engineering subjects and disciplines. 

Nature and Scope

The work performed in this classification calls for regular application of analytical and independent research skills.  This work is distinguished from students engaged in repetitive and easily learned tasks who are employed in the Office Assistant (clerical/technical) classification.  Incumbents in the Engineering Student Assistant classification perform at a similar level but are restricted to students majoring in an Engineering curriculum and performing tasks that employ acquired mathematical and science knowledge. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs tasks of an analytical or research nature for suitable projects or ongoing assignments which call for specific acquired academic skills and knowledge. 
  • May locate sources of information; collects and organizes data. 
  • Makes computations and analyzes data for degree of confidence and for alternative courses of action. 
  • May develop computer programs relating to assignments and may code material for established programs. 
  • May develop written, graphic and/or oral reports. 
  • May assist staff analysts and technical personnel by performing elements of their work under close supervision. 

Required Education

Registration as a full-time student (minimum of 12 units) at a resident academic institution in a declared curriculum that will provide the specific skills and knowledge that will contribute to available work assignments.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Junior or Senior standing
  • Majoring in Business, Data Science, Business Analytics, or related field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis (formulas, pivot tables, charts)
  • Experience with Power BI for dashboard creation
  • Experience with SharePoint for document management and collaboration 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and generate actionable insights
