The Ames National Laboratory Scientist II provides technical leadership within the Division of Critical Materials (DCM). The position conceives, designs and conducts integrated research on existing and forthcoming multiple projects primarily focused on discovering and characterizing permanent magnetic material with reduced critical rare earth content. The position collaborates with the supervisor and other PIs in both DCM and DMSE.
Major duties and responsibilities include 1) create viable concepts to address the challenges in developing permanent magnetic materials containing little or none critical materials, propose the concept to Ames Lab internal funding committees and external funding agencies in order to secure research funds to support the proposed research; 2) execute the proposed research plan by designing the experiments, implements the experimental plans, characterizes the materials structure and properties, analyzes and disseminate the results. The research falls within the area of materials science, mainly to experimentally investigate the effects of composition and processes on the materials’ microstructures and physical properties using various state of the art of synthesis, processing and characterization methods; the incumbent must be able to supervise research activities of scientific staff (includes assistant scientists, postdocs, visitors and students) in carrying out their research projects and provide training in the safe and efficient operation of the various apparatus in the research group; the incumbent must be able to collaborate with other experienced theoretical and experimental scientists both internally and externally from other national laboratories, universities, and industries in order to exchange knowledge and to perform joint research efforts; 3) reports and defends research results at prestige conferences and technical review meetings, providing detailed analysis of results for presentations and publications of collaborators; author/co-author research reports in peer reviewed publications; and write research proposals for future funding of research activities (as PI or co-PI).
This position requires the incumbent to plan, initiate, and execute research activities in collaboration with multiple PIs. The ability to interface with a diverse team of experienced experimental and theoretical scientists is essential to success in the position. Mentorship of junior scientific staff and students is an important component of this position. The duties of this position also include the maintenance and supervision of the daily operation of the state-of the state-of-the-art experimental facility.
