Role Summary
About the Role: The State Tax Manager will manage the U.S. state and local income tax compliance and tax provision processes and lead or assist in tax planning initiatives and state tax examinations as they arise.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities:
- Review U.S. state income tax returns and quarterly estimated calculations and payments
- Manage state tax examinations, working directly with tax auditors and tracking and responding to information requests, defending tax positions and reviewing and negotiating settlements
- Support operating divisions with Sales & Use tax issues by advising on rules, researching questions and issues as they arise from time to time, and occasional assistance in exams by review and advise on information requests, tax positions and assessments
- Manage state and local tax aspects of the annual and quarterly income tax provision processes of the U.S. group and otherwise assisting with the quarterly close processes
- Prepare or oversee preparation of journal entries to record state and local tax accounting entries
- Lead state tax planning and research projects
- Support process improvements initiatives within the Tax Department
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws
- Follow the principals of the Magna Employee’s Charter and promotes the Open Door Policy
- Develop, train, manage, motivate junior team members
Key Qualifications/Requirements
Who we are looking for:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting
- 6+ years of corporate tax compliance experience with managerial experience. A mix of industry and public accounting experience is preferred
- Solid knowledge of federal and state tax laws and ability to perform research and document facts, issues, and conclusions
- Demonstrated experience in and understanding of tax return processes and possession of strong financial accounting skills
- Experience managing and developing a team of Tax professionals
- Experience with OneSource, Hyperion, OneStream, MS Office, Excel, and PowerPoint
Additional Information
Your preferred qualifications:
- Advanced tax-related degree and/or CPA
- A mix is industry and Public Accounting experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
