Role Overview
As the Senior Manager of Internal Communications, you will support the development and execution of strategies that inform, engage, and inspire Cortland associates. This role plays a key part in helping employees feel connected to the company’s mission, values, and business priorities through thoughtful, well-executed messaging. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams and senior leaders to craft internal communications that enhance transparency, reinforce culture, and promote engagement across all levels of the organization.
You will manage day-to-day communications planning and execution while guiding a small internal communications team in producing compelling, timely content. This role requires strong writing and storytelling skills, project management experience, and a collaborative, service-oriented mindset.
- Support the development and implementation of internal communications strategies that align with Cortland’s mission, values, and business objectives
- Partner with leadership and key departments (e.g., HR, Talent, Operations, Facilities, Technology, Marketing, etc.) to craft and deliver clear, consistent messages across the organization
- Lead communication planning for key company initiatives such as change management, leadership updates, recognition programs, and culture-building efforts
- Manage and maintain an internal company-wide communications calendar to ensure alignment and consistency
- Help develop and distribute content across a range of channels including intranet, newsletters, digital signage, and events
- Assist in the planning and content development for Cortland’s annual conference, Cortland Prime (e.g., messaging, visuals, presentations, and video content)
- Coach and collaborate with leaders and stakeholders to ensure message clarity and tone alignment with Cortland’s brand and culture
- Review and refine content developed by others for tone, clarity, and consistency with Cortland’s internal voice
- Gather employee feedback through surveys, pulse checks, and focus groups to identify communication gaps and opportunities
- Track engagement and other KPIs to measure communication effectiveness and provide actionable insights
- Help prioritize and manage incoming communication requests, balancing proactive and reactive needs across the business
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in internal communications or a similar communications role for a complex organization, with at least 2 years in a leadership capacity.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field, MBA or advanced degree a plus
- Proven experience designing and executing strategic communication plans in a corporate environment.
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear, concise messaging.
- Strong understanding of communication technologies and platforms, including content management systems and intranets (Microsoft SharePoint).
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and senior leaders.
- Superior writing and grammar skills and a strict attention to detail
- A honed balance between strategy development, planning, and tactical execution
- Excellent organizational and project management skills
- Expert time-management, prioritization, and multitasking skills
- Ability to quickly adapt to an often-changing and fast-paced work environment
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with video production is a plus
- Moderate travel is required
