About the role

Description

The New York University (NYU) affiliated Psychiatry Department at Bellevue Hospital is an integral part of New York City’s Health + Hospitals, the nation’s largest municipal health care system with the largest public psychiatry service in the country.  Bellevue takes pride in the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, and multidisciplinary treatment to all patients in need of care.  Bellevue is also committed to medical education and serves as a primary training site for medical students, residents, fellows, and multiple other trainees from various health care disciplines.

The Adult Civilian Inpatient Psychiatry Service provides acute and intermediate level treatment for patients with a variety of psychiatric conditions, including many with severe and persistent mental illness and those who are chronically underserved and marginalized.  The service operates across multiple units, totaling nearly 200 beds, all of which are co-located within the general hospital.  Units are staffed primarily by attending psychiatrists who work alongside a close-knit team of psychologists, creative arts therapists, social workers, nurses, and ancillary staff members, as well as numerous medical and other consultants.  The inpatient teams collaborate to provide care across several modalities that include pharmacotherapy, individual and group psychotherapy, recreational therapy, pet therapy, and electroconvulsive therapy.  The service also provides specialized treatment for a number of patient populations, including patients with a high degree of medical complexity, patients with co-occurring substance use disorders, and patients who would benefit from culturally congruent care.

The Unit Chief is the clinical and operational leader of an individual unit, which is comprised of approximately 30 beds and staffed by 3 attending psychiatrists, including the Unit Chief.  The Unit Chief is responsible for direct patient care, as well as the management of unit workflow, interdisciplinary rounds, and oversight of patient care.  The Unit Chief provides training and supervision to other attending physicians on the unit, serves as primary physician liaison for other disciplines on the unit, and reports directly to the Division Director of the Adult Civilian Inpatient Psychiatry Service

The Unit Chief role is 0.1 FTE, with the remaining 0.9 FTE spent as a clinical attending physician providing care on the inpatient unit.
