Assistant Professor of Dental Health

The University of Maine at Augusta-Bangor campus invites applications for a full-time, Assistant Professor of Dental Health position. This is a nine-month, academic year appointment (September to May) based at the UMA Dental Health Clinic located on the UMA Bangor campus.  This position will require travel to the UMPI Dental Health Clinic for teaching and clinical maintenance. Some in-state travel may be required to supervise students at extramural/extended clinical facilities. The major duties of the position are teaching in-person and online, advising students and occasional clinical maintenance. Teaching assignments may include clinical and academic advising, didactic, preclinical, clinical and laboratory teaching in the Dental Assisting and EFDA Program. Job duties will also include UMPI clinic oversight, and organization of new student open houses and orientations.  Participation in professional and institutional service and scholarly activity is also expected. The anticipated start date is mid August 2026.

UMA faculty are expected to be excellent teachers, responsive to changing professional needs; committed to innovative delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning; committed to effective use of technology including distance learning; involved in scholarly activities as appropriate to appointment; and willing to provide service to the College of Professional Studies. 

Required: 

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in education, health, or related discipline for hire. 
  • A Master’s degree in education, health, or related discipline is required to be eligible for tenure.
  • State of Maine EFDA license in good standing
  • State of Maine Radiology license in good standing or license that includes authority
  • Certified Dental Assisting Certificate (CDA) in good standing 
  • 2,000 hours or a year of full-time clinical practice experience
  • Previous successful teaching experience in higher education preferably in Dental Assisting or Expanded Function Dental Assisting 
  • Ability to travel statewide as needed  (license and ability to provide transportation) 

Preferred: 

  • Clinic coordination and dental maintenance experience 
  • Successful teaching experience in higher education using varied e-learning modalities and/or proficiency in teaching using online learning management systems (LMS) (e.g. Brightspace, Kahoot, etc.)
  • The ability to integrate appropriate technology and/or software in teaching (e.g. Zoom, Smart-Classroom)
  • Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office programs (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Docs, One Drive, and with electronic dental records software (e.g. Fuse, Eaglesoft, Dentrix, etc.)
  • Active engagement in professional development, service, and scholarly activities and professional associations
  • Maine licensed RDH with local anesthesia authority in good standing 

Salary: A typical salary for this academic year appointments falls in the mid 60s and is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
