About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire an Equipment & Applications Specialist Senior in our Communications Division at State Police Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The successful candidate will lead staff on an assigned shift of a 24/7 operation, through monitoring the health of the 23 Statewide Agencies Radio System (STARS) Program and Virginia State Police (VSP) Networks to identify potential problems and perform appropriate corrective measures to ensure continuity of the communications systems throughout the Commonwealth. They also provide technical assistance and support to users of Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN), Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), LIVE SCAN, and Department issued MDT’s and iPhones throughout VSP. The position ensures documentation is maintained and ensures that the performance of technical and complex duties follow standard procedures and guidelines. Provide training to all newly hired personnel and assist shift staff with higher level problems and situations as they occur.

Minimum Qualifications

•Working knowledge of networking and telecommunications equipment, processes, and systems; of Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
•Skill in operating computers and in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Access, and Excel.
•Demonstrated ability to use network management platforms; to monitor multiple automated systems; to investigate system alarms, assess environmental conditions, and determine the correct response or course of action necessary; to monitor and maintain operational policies and procedures to ensure Information Technology (IT) security; to diagnose and resolve equipment and software problems, or notify the appropriate repair personnel within established time requirements; to provide technical assistance and support for incoming calls, using proper telephone manners and etiquette; to perform structured telephone dialog to determine computer related problems; to interpret computer problems and provide instructional information; to provide leadership and training of a team on an assigned shift to include training, higher level technical support, and staff scheduling; to visualize a problem or situation and think abstractly to solve; to communicate effectively and professionally with others using good direction and voice volume; to listen and obtain correct information, and relay important information; to work independently and as a member of a team; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English.
•High school diploma or GED equivalent. Experience in computer operations and conflict resolution is required.
•Experience in telecommunication technology or related areas is preferred.
•Relevant certification in computer technology, telecommunication technology, or related areas is preferred. Requires Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified, which requires either United States citizenship or a lawful permanent resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization. VCIN Level A Certification is required to perform the duties of this position and must be obtained within 3 months of hire. Must be able to work in 24/7 operation with scheduling flexibility as required.
