The Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD) is seeking a dynamic Public Health Nurse for its Senior Adult Mental Health (SAMH) Program. This program prioritizes independent living to improve and maintain the quality of life for older adults with mental health needs as well as individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities. We are seeking an experienced, knowledgeable, and compassionate professional who utilizes a strength-based approach towards service delivery. The incumbent will join a team of dedicated professionals, including mental health therapists, case managers, Support Coordinators, and psychiatrists who receive ongoing training in evidence-based practices related to aging and developmental disabilities.

Specific duties include:

  • Provides comprehensive nursing support to psychiatrists, clinicians, and Support Coordinators  in the Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD), including the Senior Adult Mental Health Program and Developmental Services (DS);

  • Monitors and manages monthly medication administration across the Division and reconciles CSB medications prescribed to residents of the Mary Marshall Assisted Living Residence (MMALR);

  • Serves as the ADSD clinical nursing liaison, as well as provide quarterly training to DS Support Coordinators;

  • Performs comprehensive health needs assessments and coordinates primary care integration; 
  • Conducts health screenings and administers direct care, including administration of injectable medications (IM); 
  • Facilitates access to patient assistance programs and linkages to other service providers, as needed;

  • Coordinates and monitor patient lab results with psychiatrists and completes documentation in the patient record to meet local, state, federal and agency requirements; and
  • Collaborates with Public Health Nurses in areas of expertise to assist in providing clinical care.

  • Communicates verbally with insurance companies, as needed, for prior authorization medications.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university

  • Some experience as a Registered Nurse in behavioral health nursing and/or community/public health nursing serving adult clients with mental health, substance abuse or developmental disabilities. 

 

Licenses/Certifications: Must be licensed or eligible for license by endorsement to practice professional nursing as a Registered Nurse in Virginia. The Board of Nursing may issue a license by endorsement to an applicant who has been licensed as a professional nurse by another state, the District of Columbia, or a United States possession or territory.

 

Substitution: Education may be substituted by additional directly related experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

Desirable Qualifications: Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate one or more of the following: 

  • Experience working in behavioral health, primary care clinics or similar setting;

  • Community or psychiatric nursing experience or experience working with consumers who have serious mental illness;
  • Geriatrics experience and/or experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities; 
  • Experience working on a multi-disciplinary team; and
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
