Veterinary Technician III, Animal Resources Program

JOB SUMMARY

Under limited supervision of a veterinarian, the Veterinary Tech III assists with the management and health maintenance of laboratory animals used in a research and teaching environment. Provides advanced technical support and assistance in the performance of laboratory, clinical and surgical procedures, directly related to the care and use of animals used in a research and teaching environment. This position is considered essential personnel for laboratory animal care.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Associate's degree in Animal Technology; or, High school diploma or GED equivalent and three years' experience as a veterinary assistant or technician or similar experience in an animal research facility.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION

• Driver's license valid in the state of North Carolina.
• American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician Level or higher preferred.
• Veterinary Technician registration, certification, or licensure preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Under limited to general supervision, performs the essential functions of a Veterinary Technician II.
2. Acts independently with sound judgment to triage new clinical cases for appropriate veterinary care.
3. Performs minor surgical procedures as directed.
4. Working knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act, The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, USDA regulations, AAALACi guidelines and other pertinent regulations and policies to ensure execution of humane animal care and compliance with these regulations.
5. Provides quality assurance control to the maintenance of supplies, rooms, and equipment used for veterinary care and treatment of animals.
6. Contacts vendors for repairs, pricing, and product availability at the direction of the veterinarians.
7. Develops Veterinary Care related Standard Operating Procedures as applicable.
8. Mentors lower level Veterinary Technicians in the field of laboratory animal medicine and care.
9. Demonstrates a willingness to work across institutional divisions.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

1. Advanced knowledge of the following, working with animals: surgical experience with anesthetic equipment, monitoring equipment, radiographic equipment, and various computer programs/ data entry
2. Advanced knowledge of animal disease, and the ability to recognize pain, discomfort, illness or injury in animals
3. Advanced knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, medical techniques, and standard clinical procedures
4. Mathematics skills to perform drug dose calculations and temperature conversions
5. Ability to communicate effectively
6. Ability to perform documentation and record keeping complying with SOPs and regulations
7. Ability to utilize computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Word, email, training modules)
8. Ability to work independently
9. Good time-management skills
10. Good interpersonal/ human relations skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Requires weekend, holiday and off-hours coverage as needed on a rotating basis
• Possible exposure to odors, allergens, and outdoor elements
• Exposure to human and animal pathogens
• Exposure to animals that can inflict bites, kicks, or that can scratch
• Exposure to potential hazardous/ noxious devices, chemicals, and radiation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Negative tests for active tuberculosis
