About the role

Georgetown University comprises two unique campuses in the nation’s capital. With the Hilltop Campus located in the heart of the historic Georgetown neighborhood, and the Capitol Campus, just minutes from the U.S. Capitol and U.S. Supreme Court, Georgetown University offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, and unparalleled opportunities to engage with Washington, D.C. Our community is a close-knit group of remarkable individuals driven by intellectual inquiry, a commitment to social justice, and a shared dedication to making a difference in the world.

Requirements

The Georgetown University Global Health Institute (GUGHI) serves as a university-wide platform for supporting faculty, students, and staff who are contributing to global health through research, teaching, policy, and service. The Institute has recently launched a Faith & Global Health Initiative and seeks a Program Director to lead and build this project. Their initial priority will be the coordination of a new international Lancet Commission on Faith, Trust, & Health that is being led by Georgetown University, as well as supporting research projects within the Commission.

The Faith & Global Health Initiative (FGHI) aims to strengthen relationships and mutual understanding among the faith and global health communities, to explore diverse perspectives on how beliefs interact with health in society, and to work together to strengthen investment, trust, and delivery in health services and our shared wellbeing locally and globally.  By establishing connections, networks, and a foundation of shared understanding between leaders of both spaces, the Initiative hopes to broaden public understanding of the vital importance of global health to both our own health and our moral commitments. The FGHI also seeks to engage the vast network of faith-inspired health care providers that play such a central role in health care delivery across the world, particularly in marginalized communities and hard-to-reach geographies. It seeks to map and support that network, explore the unique perspectives, opportunities, and challenges that a faith orientation can bring to health care delivery, and better connect those organizations and practitioners to the wider global health movement. Further,  the Initiative seeks to amplify the contribution and impact of faith-inspired health systems and effective engagement in global, regional and national health policy discourse.

The Program Director (PD) will work closely with the academic faculty leaders of the FGHI, the Managing Director of GUGHI, and the Senior Fellow for FGHI to provide the overall technical and administrative leadership and coordination of the FGHI and the Commission and play an active role in helping to shape the strategy for both. The role will also oversee the administration of the FGHI and Commission, including the coordination of all the people and activities involved in the related activities. This person will have the opportunity to work closely with the GUGHI senior leadership team, colleagues from the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs, a range of global health faculty and students across the University, and a network of national and global external partners in this field. Providing opportunities for professional growth at GUGHI, responsibilities of the role will include, but are not limited to:

  • Drive and coordinate the research and policy activities of the FGHI and Commission.

  • Engage widely with academics, policymakers, and practitioners working on issues of faith and global health, identifying needs and opportunities for research and policy dialogue.

  • In collaboration with colleagues at Georgetown and our external partners (including Commission co-chairs and members), design and develop our related research and policy activities and manage their successful delivery.

  • Help drive the FGHI’s work to establish partnerships with faith-based health organizations, in particular (but not only) Catholic-inspired organizations and networks, to strengthen and evaluate their work to provide health services in communities around the world.

  • Actively work with GUGHI leadership to secure additional funding for the work, oversee the overall budget, ensure that the logistics of conferences and events are effectively planned, and supervise any staff working directly for the FGHI or Commission.

Work Interactions

The Program Director will directly report to GUGHI’s Managing Director and may have up to six direct reports (includes student workers). The role will also receive senior oversight from the academic faculty leads of FGHI a
