Data Storyteller and Tableau Analyst

The New School was founded by forward-thinking educators in 1919 to defy the intellectual constraints of a traditional college education and is now the only university with a renowned design school and premier colleges focusing on the performing and liberal arts and social sciences. Reporting to the Interim Associate Provost for Institutional Research and Decision Support, the data storyteller in Institutional Research, Analytics, and Decision Support (IRADS) will combine strong data analytic and visualization skills with a deep understanding of higher education in general and The New School specifically, to transform data analyses into an understandable storyline for a wide audience of faculty, staff, students, administrators and the general public to support decisions and assess institutional effectiveness. The ideal candidate for this position will have a track record of collegial and supportive collaboration across quantitative and and qualitative fields - a self-starting, resourceful, data storyteller with analytical and visualization skills, attention to detail, problem-solving and decision-making abilities is the ideal candidate. This position will work within the existing IRADS team in collaboration with Student and Academic Systems (SAS) as part of a cross-unit team developed to provide the foundation for a more integrated vision of institutional reporting and analytics at The New School.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Create compelling data visualizations and reports to effectively communicate complex findings to both highly technical and non-technical audiences. Effectively present and communicate data and insights to a wide range of internal and external audiences.

• Edit, update, or collaborate on existing reports to create a more engaging and clear user experience.

• Blend analytical rigor and creative storytelling to enhance our University's understanding of our own data in context - providing clear actionable insights.

• Collaborate and at times lead cross-functional teams to clarify the questions to be answered, aggregate and interpret appropriate data, and communicate actionable strategies that support institutional strategic priorities.

• Provide feedback to the Data Governance Committee, and the IRADS and Student and Academic Systems (SAS) teams to improve data collection processes, local operational reporting, and refine data definitions.

• Pursue opportunities to enhance expertise in the intersection of data sciences, institutional research, higher education, analytics, and information technology to keep skills/expertise current.

• Special projects and other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• A bachelor's degree in data analytics, data visualization, data storytelling, graphic design, or communication and at least three years of professional experience in a role emphasizing data interpretation and narrative construction OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

• A natural curiosity and interest in the intersection of student success, technology, and communication - balancing questioning, problem-solving, and a detail-oriented mindset.

• Proven experience with Tableau, SQL, and Google suite.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Experience managing mid-size collaborative projects, such as those lasting 6 months to a year and two or three different areas/offices and strong organizational skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with data analysis in an institution of higher education.

WORK MODE

• Hybrid - Employees hired for this position primarily work remotely with the occasional on-campus presence required with advanced notice. Employees in this role will also be expected to use their best judgment to be on campus when necessary in order to best fulfill the responsibilities of their job descriptions. #LI-HYBRID

SALARY RANGE 

$62,400 - $75,000 per annum
