Purpose of Job
The Data Scientist is pivotal in driving digital transformation initiatives within the Chemicals sector. This role involves leveraging advanced data-driven techniques to boost business performance and foster innovation. With expertise in statistical modeling, machine learning, data analytics, data engineering, and full-stack dashboard development, the Data Scientist tackles complex challenges and develops tools that enhance decision-making processes. Additionally, they promote a culture of continuous learning and collaboration within the data science team, the digital transformation team, and Sasol Chemicals. The role requires self-organization within a project team, prioritizing the work of junior peers, and providing direction for tech stack and tool development with very little supervision.
Key Accountabilities
- Design, develop, and implement data-driven solutions using advanced statistical modeling, machine learning, and data analytics techniques.
- Contribute to data science projects, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of initiatives that improve business performance, customer experience, and operational efficiency.
- Provide technical expertise in data science, promoting best practices and methodologies within the team.
- Stay updated with the latest technological advancements and industry trends in data science, incorporating them into your work to maintain a cutting-edge approach.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure data science solutions align with business goals and objectives.
- Participate in data integrity and accuracy initiatives by implementing robust data governance and quality control measures.
- Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, translating data insights into actionable business strategies.
- Assist in the implementation of scalable and sustainable data infrastructure in collaboration with IT and other relevant departments.
- Upskill direct colleagues and prioritize the work of junior peers, providing guidance on the tech stack and tool development.
- Engage in self-organized working within project teams, requiring very little supervision.
Formal Education
- University Bachelors Degree in Business, Economics STEM or related field
Working Experience
- 5+ years relevant years’ experience
- Demonstrated experience in data science, including statistical modelling, machine learning, and data analytics.
- A track record of contributing to impactful data science projects within a corporate environment.
Required Personal/Professional Skills
• In-depth knowledge of statistics, mathematical optimization, and machine learning techniques. • Proficiency in DevOps principles, MVC-based application development (Django, React, Python, SQL), and app deployment and hosting (Git, Docker, Kubernetes, Azure). • Advanced expertise in Python, SQL, and data model design. • Strong analytical abilities with a talent for solving complex problems while considering broader perspectives. • Solution-oriented and proactive, with a strong personal drive to achieve and exceed goals. • Excellent communication skills, capable of translating technical jargon for non-technical stakeholders.
