About the Department

Collectively, members of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell biology are engaged in investigating molecular aspects of biological phenomena that operate on a cellular scale. Faculty research employs a combination of advanced microscopy, genetic analysis, and molecular characterization to study the temporal and spatial mechanisms that underlie the essential functions of cells and of their interactions with other cells that are necessary for the regular development of multicellular organisms. Faculty use many of the field’s traditional model organisms in their work and are pushing into emerging model and non-model organisms that are proving uniquely valuable in particular studies. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.

Job Summary

The Carrillo Lab at The University of Chicago is seeking a highly motivated Data Science Analyst to work primarily with lab members on various projects to analyze large data sets. As a key member of our team, this position will develop analytical and statistical pipelines to quantify and identify meaningful insights from transcriptomic, proteomic, and imaging data.

Responsibilities

• Assist lab members with data management and compliance with funding agencies requirements.

• Evaluate past and present technologies in the literature to help develop new data analysis tools.

• Work with lab members to evaluate data and extract quantifiable metrics.

• Develop pipelines for specific data sets (e.g. transcriptomic, proteomic, imaging) to extract significant metrics.

• Present technical trainings, hands-on workshops, and documentation to lab members.

• Assist in creating professional graphs and figures for grants and manuscripts.

• May assist staff or faculty members with data manipulation, statistical applications, programming, analysis and modeling on a scheduled or ad-hoc basis.

• Maintains and analyzes statistical models using general knowledge of best practices in machine learning and statistical inference. Performs maintenance on large and complex research and administrative datasets. Responds to requests and engages other IT resources as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

• 1+ years of work experience in data analysis.

• Fluency in data manipulation and analysis.

• Proficiency using statistical programming packages, such as Python and R.

• Proficiency creating and presenting findings to a broad audience.

• Fluency in Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.

• Exposure or experience in any of the following is a plus: Monte Carlo Simulations, Tableau, LLMs, and AutoCAD.
