About the role

Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSM) Clinical Translational and Science Institute Office of Informatics is seeking a Database Programmer. The WFUSM Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is a unified research organization designed to provide innovative, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure that accelerates the translation of discoveries to improve health. The CTSI supports faculty and staff conducting research at ADVOCATE HEALTH through the provision of creative tools and services while maintaining the highest standards for conducting safe and ethical research.  This position is primarily focused on supporting the work and research of the Center for Health System Sciences (CHASSIS) with projects focused on the Academic Learning Health System, translating research to clinical practice and evaluating a continuous improvement lifecycle. Informatics is seeking a database professional to build and support data transaction procedures and research-focused application systems. Candidate will collaborate and communicate with faculty, product managers, and other software developers, to design, test, deploy, and support multiple solutions across various database platforms.

Candidate will collaborate and communicate with faculty, product managers, and other software developers, to design, test, deploy, and support multiple solutions across various database platforms.

Much of the work entailed within this position will require an understanding of both the Epic Clarity and Epic Caboodle Data models.  Training will be afforded to pursue certification within both data models, if needed. Any prior experience working within these data models and/or general work within management of healthcare data is desired.

Under general supervision, design and implement database Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) procedures and jobs.  Document and collect metrics.
Exhibit ability to use a wide variety of research computer software tools and operating system environments.
Achieve and maintain EPIC Clarity certifications within 12 months of hire date (may require up to two trips to EPIC Training facility in Wisconsin)
Additional desirable qualifications include:

  1. Experience with SQL queries and multi-tier SQL system development on multiple platforms (Oracle, SQLServer, Postgres)
  2. Experience with healthcare and/or biomedical research operations and systems
  3. Experience with database systems administration, performance profiling, index creation and evaluation
  4. Experience with agile software development and the software lifecycle
  5. Experience with code versioning systems such as Git

Duties: 

  • Designing and implementing Extract, Transform, & Load (ETL) scripts for moving data between hospital systems and data warehouses 
  • Retrieving data from the data warehouse and various clinical and operational database systems to fulfill requests for data to support research investigations 
  • Evaluating database performance, creating and/or adjusting indexing, partitioning, and data model schemes to improve performance 
  • Collaborate with faculty, team leader, and coworkers to anticipate, define, and satisfy data needs and feasibility 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor's degree with computer courses and four years' experience in computer programming or operations research required; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience in computer programming.  
  • Advanced experience with Oracle and/or SQL Server required.  
  • Knowledge of medical data, standards, and terminology preferred.  
  • Experience working in a cloud environment preferred.  
  • Capability to analyze and improve query performance through code revision, indexing, and partitioning preferred. 
  • Candidate will be required to complete EHR database certification within 18 months, which may require two weeks of travel.
