The School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), invites applicants and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Clinical Programs and Outreach (ADCPO). We are seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to ensure excellence of the clinical curriculum and confluence with the preclinical curriculum through commitment to advancing excellence in veterinary education, fostering a culture of innovation, and promoting academic success among our students A major responsibility of the position is engagement and oversight of the veterinary community as providers within the semi-distributed clinical model to achieve distinction in veterinary education in workplace learning. The ADCPO will oversee the office of clinical programs and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of clinical rotations, clinic operations, and patient care with the UMES SVM. Commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

The ideal candidate for the ADCPO should be an innovative, collaborative leader who can contribute within an inspired academic community to reimagine and transform veterinary medical education aimed at creating a vibrant learning ecosystem that graduates not only career ready, but future ready veterinarians to meet the ever-evolving healthcare needs of the 21st Century and beyond.

The Associate Dean for Clinical Programs and Outreach will serve as a key leader of the UMES SVM leadership team and will be responsible for oversight of the clinical curriculum and outreach to the veterinary and animal owning communities. The ADCPO will work in conjunction with the Dean to ensure that the school’s vision, strategic direction, and priorities are implemented effectively, especially as they pertain to a culture of creativity, innovation, risk taking, collaboration, and inclusivity towards better outcomes and future readiness. They will also ensure that the clinical year curriculum is coordinated with the preclinical curriculum, and that it meets all requirements of the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA COE) requirements, as well as complying with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s policies and procedures. A critical role of the position is to develop and maintain relations with clinical affiliate partners and clinical educator veterinarians that provide clinical resources for student learning. This position is primarily administrative with approximate components of innovative explorations, outreach, teaching, and research

Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the Associate Dean for Clinical Programs and Outreach are oversight of all aspects of the clinical curriculum and outreach to the veterinary and animal owning communities. Included are the creation, implementation, and preservation of an innovative clinical workplace curriculum. The ADCPO serves as the lead advocate for students during the clinical phase of their education. As a member of the senior leadership team of the School, the Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean, and is responsible for:
• Contributing to the creation, implementation, and preservation of a vibrant,
innovative, constantly evolving integrated preclinical and clinical veterinary
curriculum aimed at graduating competent,
career ready, ethical, adaptable, and inclusive veterinarians.
• Promoting the mission of the UMES SVM to faculty, staff, students, clinical
affiliate partners, and to the local, state, national, and international
communities, as appropriate.
• Contributing to a culture of creativity, innovation, risk taking, collaboration, and
inclusivity towards better outcomes and future readiness.
• Promoting effective, collaborative, inclusive working relationships among
faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders.
• Advocating for student learning in the clinical year.
• Advancing the principles of andragogy and pedagogy within the clinical
curriculum.
• Providing oversight of the external collaborators (clinical affiliate partners)
contributing to the clinical education of veterinary students, ensuring mutually
beneficial relationships and outcomes; recruiting and calibrating internal and
external clinical sites and developing, organizing, and overseeing the clinical
rotation schedule including all faculty and student assessments.
• Ensuring that the UMES SVM achieves and maintains full AVMA COE
accreditation through effective oversight of the clinical curriculum and related
contributions to the preparation and submission of required materials and
documents.
