Sr. Cloud Engineer
Pacific LifeAbout the role
Job Description:
Providing for loved ones, planning rewarding retirements, saving enough for whatever lies ahead – our policyholders count on us to be there when it matters most. It’s a big ask, but it’s one that we have the power to deliver when we work together. We collaborate and innovate – pushing one another to transform not just Pacific Life, but the entire industry for the better. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do. Pacific Life is more than a job, it’s a career with purpose. It’s a career where you have the support, balance, and resources to make a positive impact on the future – including your own.
We’re actively seeking a talented Senior Cloud Engineer to join our Underwriting and New Business Technology team in Charlotte, NC.
As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you’ll move Pacific Life, and your career, forward by designing, building, and operating secure cloud infrastructure and automation that accelerates delivery for underwriting and new business capabilities. You will fill a new role that sits on a team of cross‑functional technology professionals in the CMD Technology division supporting Life Underwriting and New Business. Your colleagues will include software engineers, SRE/operations partners, product owners, architects, security partners, and data/automation specialists, working together in Agile delivery to modernize platforms and enable business outcomes.
How you’ll help move us forward:
- Own cloud infrastructure and delivery for an Underwriting product by designing, building, deploying, and operating the product’s cloud environments end‑to‑end (dev, test, UAT, prod), in close partnership with the product team.
- Embed with the product team (engineers, product owner, QA, and business partners) to translate underwriting business needs into scalable, secure, and resilient cloud solutions.
- Build and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and environment automation to ensure consistent, repeatable, and auditable deployments aligned to enterprise standards.
- Design and operate CI/CD pipelines that support frequent, reliable releases, including automated testing, security checks, and deployment strategies tailored to the product.
- Ensure production readiness and operational excellence by implementing monitoring, logging, alerting, and automated recovery; actively participate in on‑call support and incident resolution for the product.
- Apply cloud security best practices at the product level, including identity and access management, secrets handling, encryption, and compliance with enterprise and regulatory requirements.
- Partner with architects, platform, and security teams to align product‑specific implementations with shared cloud patterns while advocating for product needs.
- Continuously optimize cost, performance, and reliability of the product’s cloud footprint using data, metrics, and feedback from real usage.
- Contribute to Agile delivery by estimating work, breaking down stories, and delivering incremental value as part of the product team.
The experience you bring:
- 5+ years of experience in cloud engineering, DevOps, SRE, or software engineering roles, with experience supporting production applications.
- Hands‑on experience owning cloud infrastructure for an application or product, not just shared platforms.
- Practical experience with AWS and/or Azure, including designing and operating application‑level cloud services.
- Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred) and environment automation.
- BS in Computer Science and/or Engineering, or equivalent experience and certifications.
- Experience building and supporting CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps Pipelines or equivalent) tied directly to application delivery.
- Working knowledge of application‑level cloud security, networking, and identity concepts.
- Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (Python, PowerShell, Bash, Java, or Node.js) used for automation and operational tooling.
- Experience leveraging AI‑assisted engineering tools (e.g., code generation, test creation, infrastructure automation, incident analysis, or documentation) to improve developer productivity and delivery quality.
- Foundational understanding of AI/ML concepts as applied to engineering, such as prompt engineering, model integration via APIs, and responsible use of AI in secure, regulated environments.
- Experience working in Agile, product‑centric teams, collaborating closely with developers and product owners.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical decisions and tradeoffs to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
What makes you stand out:
- Strong Experience integrating AI capabilities into engineering workflows or platform
