Overview
The Surveyor Trainee supports, assists, and participates in the work of the survey staff in a para-professional position. Learns and trains start to finish surveys, prepares documents for field personnel, reviews survey submittals, and assist with fieldwork as necessary.
Essential Functions
1 Assists and supports in the preparation of various types of surveys that require result in final drawings and legal descriptions; learns how to survey plats, easements, and property acquisitions; performs research, calculations, data analysis, and drafting and composing a legal description.
2 Performs and provides assistance for vertical control surveys as requested by various departments; learns various techniques including differential leveling to perform survey work with accuracy and efficiency.
3 Reviews and evaluates surveys done in house as well as those submitted by consultants; checks survey work for accuracy before it is accepted by the city; identifies discrepancies or problems and ensures the appropriate personnel are notified and the situation resolved.
4 Assists in the processing of field data for incorporation into MicroStation for use by survey staff; effectively converts field data into a usable office format.
5 Drafts and prepares information for use by the field staff; researches survey area, prepares maps or drawings, and provides them with other materials such as deeds or other maps; supports the overall efficiency and accuracy of workers performing survey work in the field.
6 Performs and supports various other unusual or unique survey situations; works with contractors and other vendors to provide accurate and efficient surveying work for differing situations.
7 Performs any and all other work as required or assigned.

1 Knowledge of surveying tools, methods, and practices.
2 Drafting and reporting skills
3 Mathematical skills, typing, and general clerical skills.
4 Knowledge and understanding of safety procedures
5 Researching and understanding deeds and other survey related records
6 Ability to learn and develop understanding of survey techniques and special situations
7 Establishing and maintaining strong relationships.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree or higher in a Surveying field.
EQUIVALENCIES
Bachelor's degree with thirty-two (32) hours in civil Engineering, Land Surveying, Math, Photogrammetry, Forestry, Land Law or the Physical Sciences and one (1) year of experience working under a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS) will substitute for the education requirement.
Associate degree in Surveying and two (2) years of experience working under a RPLS will substitute for the education requirement.
Thirty-two (32) hours in Land Surveying courses and two (2) years of experience working under a RPLS will substitute for the education requirement.
High school diploma or GED, four (4) years of experience working under an RPLS, and proof of self-education in Land Surveying will substitute for the education requirement.
Current, valid licensure as a RPLS will substitute for the education requirement.
Current, valid certification as a Surveyor in Trainee (SIT) will substitute for the education requirement.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Valid driver's license with good driving record.
Must be able to obtain a Surveyor in Training (SIT) certificate issued by the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveyor (TBPLS) with the probationary period.
