Position Overview
The Novelis Government Affairs team is seeking a Director, Federal Government Affairs based in Washington, D.C. The person in this role will report to the VP, Public Affairs and Communications. The position supports Government Affairs in the development and execution of federal advocacy on issues of importance to Novelis and the aluminum industry. While advocacy focused, the position will also include frequent interactions with Novelis senior executives and subject matter experts for purposes of understanding the impact of policy on the business, as well as ensuring the right policy positioning and messaging. Responsibilities & Qualifications
Responsibilities:
- Represent Novelis’ business and policy interests in meetings with federal policymakers, external advocacy groups and industry representatives, in collaboration with Novelis executives and subject matter experts.
- Expand Novelis outreach to and engagement with federal legislators, especially those representing districts and states in which the company has a presence. Proactively develop and leverage connections with these legislators and their staff in support of Novelis, working, as appropriate, with stakeholders.
- Assist in research on a wide array of federal policy issues, including recycling, energy, environment, tax and trade, working collaboratively with internal and external partners.
- Design and implement Government Affairs’ advocacy strategies, and help support internal and external communications on relevant federal policy issues and related Government Affairs’ activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or non-US equivalent in Public Policy, Political Science or related subject areas.
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience in public policy, legislative affairs, lobbying or applicable areas.
- Demonstrated experience and interest in federal policy issues, e.g., recycling, energy, environment, etc., and the political process.
- Government and/or industry experience.
- Demonstrated success in proactively building and working collaboratively with strategic alliances, coalitions, trade groups, etc.
- Extremely proactive, collaborative, organized, and meticulous, with an ability to balance multiple issues and activities simultaneously in a highly professional manner.
- Highly engaging and self-motivated, responsive, results-oriented with proven ability to deliver results within tight timeframes.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain credibility with both external partners and Novelis colleagues at all levels of the company, including members of the Executive Committee.
- Outstanding communication skills (both oral and written) with proficiency using various communication tools and platforms.
- Ability to travel 15-20%, predominantly domestic.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced Degree in Public Policy, Political Science or related subject areas
- Capitol Hill, corporate and/or trade association experience strongly preferred.
