Job Description:

This is an open continuous vacancy announcement that will be used to fill an adjunct vacancy to teach Italian Culture and Society. The World Languages and Cultures (WLC) Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for an adjunct faculty position for the 2027 Spring semester to teach a 3-credit course: “Italian Culture and Society”. Rank will depend on an applicant’s highest degree earned in the field.  The applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

The candidate should: (1) hold an advanced degree (Ph.D. or M. A.) in Italian Studies from a nationally accredited institution; (2) have demonstrated excellence in teaching Italian Studies at the college level across all levels; (3) possess near-native proficiency in English and Italian; (4) be committed to collegiality, good citizenship, and a desire to serve the department and the school. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrate independence in research and teaching. The class will be taught in English.

We seek an experienced, versatile candidate, who, through their work, teaching, research, and/or service will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the World Languages and Culture Department.  The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction at the undergraduate level and fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach one course within the Italian program as assigned
  • Develop lesson plans and classroom material in alignment with the department standards
  • Incorporate Italian culture into instruction
  • Evaluate and assess student performance in a timely manner
  • Hold regular office hours to support student learning
  • Use the learning management platform Canvas to communicate and post course material.

The Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences has the following adjunct salary ranges:

Candidates Without a Terminal Degree In Course Subject Area

1-2 Credit Course: $3,130

3-4 Credit Course: $5,163

5-6 Credit Course: $5,395

Candidates With a Terminal Degree In Course Subject Area

1-2 Credit Course: $3,730

3-4 Credit Course: $5,900

5-6 Credit Course: $6,062

Hiring offers for this position are contingent on successful completion of a background check.
