Job Summary

The Mobile Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing underground mobile equipment and ancillary support equipment. The role is critical for minimizing downtime and ensuring equipment reliability, while supporting a strong culture of safety, environmental responsibility, and communication across maintenance and operational teams.

Essential Functions

  • Participate in equipment assembly, pre-operational inspections, and functional testing for underground mobile fleet including haul trucks, loaders (LHDs), drills, light vehicles, and utility vehicles.
  • Verify mechanical systems, hydraulics, and electrical interfaces during commissioning to ensure readiness for safe operation.
  • Support development of maintenance work packages, standard operating procedures, and training guides for new underground equipment.
  • Collaborate with OEM representatives and construction teams to resolve technical issues identified during commissioning.
  • Participate in risk assessments and pre-startup safety reviews for underground equipment and maintenance areas.
  • Perform advanced preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on underground mobile equipment such as haul trucks, loaders, drills, bolters, and support vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and cooling systems; coordinate with electricians and planners for integrated repairs.
  • Conduct routine inspections and condition monitoring to identify issues before failure; document findings in the CMMS.
  • Lead or support root-cause failure analyses and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability and reduce downtime.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping, contamination control, and safety in underground workshops and field environments.
  • Support mine shutdown planning, rebuilds, and reliability projects; assist in ordering and staging parts and materials.
  • Train and guide junior mechanics in technical tasks, safe work practices, and troubleshooting methods consistent with Kinross standards.
  • Promote Kinross’s Safeground Ethos, emphasizing safe work behaviors, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; technical trade certification in heavy equipment maintenance preferred.
  • 8 + years of mobile maintenance experience with at least 5 years in an underground mining environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in equipment commissioning, rebuilds, or maintenance planning highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to train and mentor others in maintenance techniques and safety procedures.
  • Strong mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic troubleshooting skills specific to underground mobile mining equipment.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and OEM software for fault analysis.
  • Knowledge of reliability and condition-based maintenance principles.
  • Familiarity with underground ventilation, diesel particulate controls, and contamination management practices.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, OEM manuals, and work orders accurately.
  • Experience using CMMS systems (e.g., JDE) and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills; able to work effectively in confined and variable conditions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices and continuous improvement.
  • Valid driver’s license required; MSHA underground certification (or ability to obtain) preferred.
  • Authorized to work in the US.
