Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated RN/ODP for the Band 6 anaesthetic and recovery team leader in the Day Surgery Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital. There is an opportunity to enhance your management skills and be actively involved in supporting the department from a management viewpoint and moving the department forward.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and have outstanding clinical skills. You must be an effective communicator and good organisational skills.

As an experienced Anaesthetic and Recovery practitioner you will demonstrate excellent knowledge, skill and be proactive and visible to build and form good relationships with your team and within the wider MDT. In this role you will be responsible for the daily running of the unit and coordinate the elective service provision by workin collaboratively with nurses, ODP's anaesthetists and clinicians.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

We seek a committed and flexible individual who can demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and have outstanding clinical skills. As an experienced anaesthetic and recovery practitioner, you will demonstrate excellent knowledge, skills and be proactive and highly visible clinical leadership to build and form good relationships with your team and the wider MDT. The post holder will act as a clinical expert for their speciality, being the first port of call for anaesthetic/PACU requests and escalate any concerns for potential impacts to the department.

In this role you will be responsible for the day to day coordination of our busy Day Surgery unit of 4 theatres, PACU and procedure room.

Job description

To be responsible for direct leadership of delegated staff, including but not limited to performing return to work interviews, appraisal of staff and escalating to senior colleagues areas of poor conduct and/or performance and undertaking appropriate action to support improvement in poor conduct and or performance.

Support the theatre leadership team in all activities related to the improvement of theatre utilisation ensuring effective communication and flow.

Take responsibility for the running of the lists if necessary, ensuring a proactive approach to prompt starts, maintenance of flow and adherence to safer surgery guidelines. It is the responsibility of the post holder to take appropriate steps to ensure this is the case and escalate if this is being compromised.

Ensure the safer surgery checklist principles are adhered to, taking the lead if necessary, ensuring the presence of the entire team.

Support working collaboratively with Infection Control, Risk Management and corporate nursing to ensure actions from audits and incidents are acted upon and resolved in a timely manner.

Act in a link role e.g. Infection Control, Risk Management and Fire Safety. Attend meetings to undertake role responsibilities and feedback education and learning to the wider team as required.

Monitor the delivery of mandatory training and highlight to clinical coordinators if this is becoming compromised.

Ensure the delivery of high quality evidenced based care within theatre and recovery.

Work to deliver a customer focused culture acting as a role model.

Participate in the management of the department in the absence of the clinical Manager

Manage and coordinate the efficient running of the theatre list

Demonstrate the ability to provide appropriate assistance in anaesthetic care (pre, intra, and immediate post op) and anticipating the anaesthetic needs.
