Indian River State College invites applicants for a full-time teaching position at the rank of Master Instructor.  AOS/AOC open.  The ideal candidate will be a skilled communicator, able to support and enhance the department’s course offerings in philosophy.  Preference shall be given to candidates with a strong background in logic and critical thinking and who are able to teach from an interdisciplinary perspective in the humanities. 

Responsibilities for this position include providing prompt feedback to students and assisting the department in curricular review.  Candidates should be ready to meet the needs of diverse learners from multiple backgrounds.  Finally, candidates with a strong record in course design is preferred.

IRSC is one of the most affordable state colleges in the country, offering a mixture of two and four year programs.  The Humanities Department is composed of four full-time philosophers and seven full-time historians.  We offer general education courses serving a five-county area.  Priority will be given to applications received by DATE but the position will remain open until filled.  Applicants with specialization in any philosophical background, historical or contemporary, are welcome and encouraged to apply. 

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

The minimum qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:

  • A Master’s degree in Philosophy (a minimum of eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in Philosophy) from an accredited institution;
  • Proven knowledge of and experience in teaching Philosophy at the undergraduate level;
  • Ability to recognize and respond to the individual differences of students from a culturally diverse student population;
  • Willingness to make students active partners in the teaching/learning process;
  • Computer literacy and experience using computers in the classroom;
  • Willingness to apply technology and innovative approaches to the teaching of Philosophy;
  • The following is preferred:
    • Two to five years of teaching experience in a college or post-secondary institution;
    • Research and publication useful to classroom instruction.
    • A Ph.D in philosophy
