About the role

Summary

The internship provides hands-on training in bioinformatics within a neurological research environment at the Jan and Duncan Neurological Research Institute. The intern will receive structured onboarding in bioinformatics fundamentals, data handling, and analytical techniques, followed by progressive involvement in real-world research projects. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, the intern will apply computational and analytical methods to biological datasets, gain exposure to ongoing research initiatives, and develop practical skills through project-based learning, regular feedback, and collaborative lab activities.

Job Purpose

Provides temporary administrative or laboratory support to a department while gaining practical work experience.  

Job Duties

  • Participate in introductory training on bioinformatics concepts and project objectives
  • Manage, clean, and organize biological and genomics-related datasets
  • Conduct statistical and computational analyses using established workflows
  • Apply programming skills (e.g., Python and R) to support data analysis tasks
  • Interpret and summarize analytical results under mentor supervision
  • Contribute to ongoing research projects within the lab
  • Perform literature reviews related to assigned research topics
  • Attend lab meetings, project discussions, and training sessions
  • Prepare and present findings or project updates as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in high school, trade/vocational school or higher education institution. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Bioinformatics, Biomedical Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python and R
  • Basic understanding of molecular biology concepts
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Interest in bioinformatics research and project-based learning
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a research-focused environment
