Special Education Classroom Aide

Position Summary

The Special Education Classroom Aide provides instructional, behavioral, and personal support to students with disabilities in both general education classrooms and special education classrooms. Working under the supervision of the Special Education Teacher, Classroom Teacher or Building Principal, the classroom aide assists in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), supporting academic achievement, encouraging independence, and fostering a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist the teachers in implementing daily instructional activities and lesson plans.
• Provide academic support to students and small groups in reading, writing, mathematics, and other content areas.
• Reinforce instructional concepts introduced by the teacher using appropriate accommodations and modifications.
• Encourage appropriate social interactions, communication skills, and positive peer relationships.
• Collaborate with teachers, related service providers, administrators, and other support staff to promote student success.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with district policy, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher, Director of Special Education, or Building Principal.

Qualifications

• Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Paraprofessional License or other required state credentials.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to establish positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
