Outdoor Wilderness Laboratory - Health Assistant


Job Summary:
The employee will serve as the OWL Health Assistant, providing intermittent overnight health services for the Outdoor Wilderness Lab (OWL). Working under the direction and delegation of the assigned Registered Nurse (RN), the Health Assistant supports the health and safety of students by providing delegated medical care, medication administration, first aid, overnight health office coverage, emergency response, and student supervision related to health needs during assigned OWL sessions.

This assignment includes responsibilities before, during, and following assigned OWL sessions and reflects work beyond the employee's regular building assignment.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Student Health Care
    • Working under the delegation and supervision of the assigned Registered Nurse, the Health Assistant will:
  • Provide first aid and delegated medical care to students experiencing illness or injury.
  • Administer medications and delegated medical procedures in accordance with physician orders, District procedures, and RN delegation.
  • Monitor students with chronic medical conditions and notify the RN regarding changes in health status.
  • Follow student health care plans and emergency action plans.
  • Overnight Student Health Support
    • Remain on-site during assigned overnight shifts.
    • Respond to student illnesses, injuries, medication needs, and other health concerns occurring during evening and overnight hours.
    • Communicate with the assigned RN regarding student concerns requiring nursing assessment or direction.
    • Initiate emergency procedures, including contacting EMS, when appropriate.
    • Maintain student supervision related to health office needs during overnight hours.
  • Health Office Operations
    • Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and confidential health office.
    • Receive, secure, store, administer, document, and reconcile student medications.
    • Maintain appropriate medical supplies and communicate supply needs.
    • Ensure medications and health records are handled according to District procedures.
  • Communication and Collaboration
    • Collaborate with the assigned RN, OWL staff, school nurses, and administrators regarding student health needs.
    • Communicate with parents or guardians as directed by the RN or OWL administration.
    • Notify the RN promptly regarding significant student health concerns, injuries, medication issues, or emergencies.
    • Participate in daily communication regarding student medical status and ongoing care.
  • Documentation and Recordkeeping
    • Maintain student health records in accordance with District procedures and applicable confidentiality requirements.
  • Training and Professional Responsibilities
    • Complete all required orientation and training assigned by the Nursing Coordinator prior to providing OWL nursing services.


Qualifications:

Acceptable demonstration of acceptable education and/or experience will be at the sole discretion of the District.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, preference for additional courses in medical caregiving or other relevant topics
  • Preference given for applicants with prior experience in the medical field or other first-aid experience
  • Valid Colorado driver's license or valid Colorado identification required
  • Health Assistant Work Keys Assessment passing score required for hire
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification within 30 days of hire


Working Conditions:

Work Schedule: During assigned sessions, the Health Assistant is expected to:

  • Work 12-hour overnight shifts (Monday through Thursday nights) while students are present at OWL.
  • Remain on-site for the duration of the assigned shift and be immediately available to respond to student illnesses, injuries, medication needs, and other health-related concerns.
