Reporting to the Vice Provost of Research and Data, the Managing Director of Data Engineering, Reporting, and Visualization will lead efforts to make data accessible and actionable for improved decision-making.  They will set the vision for data monitoring and business intelligence related to students and student data (enrollment, academic performance, survey measures, etc.), and will manage a team of three direct reports to maintain, improve, and implement new data infrastructure.  Specifically, the Managing Director will lead efforts to 

The Managing Director will play a pivotal role in setting business intelligence strategy and in creating and improving information solutions.  As such, applicants should possess strong technical skills (SQL, Azure, PowerBI, API, Pipeline, ETL,, etc.) as well as strong interpersonal & management skills.  This role is an outstanding opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the work of an institution that is reshaping the landscape of public education. 

Role’s Contributions (Duties and Responsibilities): 

Overview

  • Understand the data and analytic needs of internal stakeholders across Relay,
  • Improve the integration between our Operational Data Store (ODS) and other data systems (Anthology Student, Slate, Canvas, Rise, SIS, Anthology Portfolio, Alchemer, Unit4BW, etc.),
  • Create a vibrant ecosystem of PowerBI dashboards that visualize our most important data,
  • Enhance the semantic layers that make those dashboards possible, 
  • Scale integrated reporting from our new student information system (Anthology student), and
  • Lead the design and associated change management, where necessary, to improve or pivot data and visualization architecture so that is more efficient, useful, and sustainable.

Management and Leadership

  • Manage a team of three highly-technical direct reports to support strong and timely data intelligence practices and visualization across the organization in alignment with the Research team’s goals
  • Manage ~$100K/year budget on ~3 IT consultants, leading weekly scrums and asynchronous DevOps that leverage consultants to improve architecture
  • Lead cross-functional engagement of stakeholders across Relay teams (teacher preparation, accreditation, development, student services, etc.) to identify key reporting needs and requirements for business objectives (e.g. improving Relay’s effectiveness, supporting individual students, and reporting data to states, accreditors, and funders)
  • Direct changes that improve technical reporting architecture, including but not limited to weekly updates (mapping, semantic changes, etc.) and larger shifts (revised permissioning schemes, migrating ETL from Altova to Microsoft, wholescale updating of EdFi data-model, etc.)
  • Train users across Relay to independently access visualizations and reports related to their work, manipulate that data within dashboards and reports, and accurately interpret those data in service of their own processes
  • Support direct reports in their professional development and skill acquisition

Architecture and Integrations

  • Set and implement a vision for efficient, sustainable architecture for student data monitoring, visualization, and business intelligence in alignment with the Research team’s strategy 
  • Lead efforts of oneself, direct reports, and consultants to build secure and sustainable SIS pipelines (ETL, API, Azure Data Factory) that lead to accurate and timely reflections of source system data in end reports and dashboards and user-acceptance of applicable Relay stakeholders
  • Lead efforts of oneself, direct reports, and consultants to test and validate all configurations to operational data store, semantic model, SSRS reports, and Power BI dashboards
  • Manage version control for code, datasets, and analysis using Git, DevOps, or the like, owning the master branch and approving all updates
  • Lead the design, implementation, and change management associated with Power BI redesign

Building Reports and Dashboards

  • Oversee creation of Anthology reports (5-10 per semester) and role-out of Anthology analytics<
